Max Call Obituary

GEORGETOWN - Max C. Call, 91, passed away Saturday morning, April 1, 2023, in San Marcos, Texas, with his loved ones at his side, after a hard fight with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.

He was born on a snowy March 14, 1932, on Oak Street in Georgetown, to Fred and Dorothy Call. Most of his youth was spent in Georgetown, Jamaica, Ill., and Ridge Farm.  He walked through a tough childhood, and sports had become an avenue to succeed. In high school, he relocated to Clinton, Ind., where he excelled at baseball and helped lead their basketball team to the state semifinals in 1949.

He earned an athletic scholarship to Wabash College but was soon drafted into the Korean War on Sept. 16, 1952. During his military service as an MP, he was selected to stand guard at the Truce Talks and the signing of the Korean Armistice Agreement. Upon returning home, he enrolled at Indiana State University and graduated with both a bachelor's and master's degree. It was there that he met his wife Peg, and they married in 1957.

His teaching career began in Perrysville and Cayuga, but most of his time was spent in Georgetown, where he also coached. Max owned his own insurance and real-estate business and served on the Vermilion County board as chairman for 10 years. He derived great satisfaction and reward through his work for the county.

Max loved relaxing in his backyard, lighthearted conversations and an occasional cigar.  He remained physically active his entire life and closely followed his favorite sports teams. Last July, he and his wife made the courageous decision to leave their beloved home and move to Texas to be near family, who love them dearly. He led a full, productive and joyful life and will be truly missed by those who knew him well.

He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Margaret (Peg); daughter, Cindy Ejankowski (Bruno) of San Marcos, Texas; son, Clay Call (Sherry) of Gaylesville, Ala.; three grandchildren, Caitlyn (Eric) Iverson, Mariel (Andrew) Miller and Jacob Call Ejankowski; three great-grandchildren, Alice, Louisa and Beatrice; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Dorothy Mae Eckhoff.

A celebration of Max's life will be at noon Friday, April 28, at Sunset Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 200 E. West St., Georgetown, IL 61846, with Pastor James Blue officiating. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to noon Friday prior to her service at the funeral home. He will be laid to rest in McKendree Cemetery, Georgetown.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the Georgetown Historical Society or American Cancer Foundation. Please join his family in sharing memories, photos and videos through his tribute wall at sunsetfuneralhome.com.
