CHAMPAIGN - Russell C. Somers, 76, of Champaign died at 4:58 a.m. Sunday (Oct. 5, 2025) at home in Champaign.
There will be a funeral service at 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 9, at Owens Funeral Home, 101 N. Elm St., Champaign, with Deacon Jim Brewer officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service from 10 to 11 a.m. Burial will be in Grandview Memorial Gardens, Champaign. Burial rites will be accorded by American Legion Post 24.
Russell was born on Aug. 13, 1949, in Monticello, a son of Francis and Elaine (White) Somers. He married Elaine "Sherri" McHenry in Ivesdale on March 26, 1983.
Survivors include his wife, Elaine of Champaign; one son, Justin Somers of Champaign; two stepsons, Corey Olden of Pesotum and Jon Olden of Savoy; three brothers, Tom Somers of Monticello, David Somers of Texas and Kevin Somers of White Heath; one sister, Jennifer Somers of Champaign; two grandchildren, Devon and Maddie; and one great-grandson, Braxton.
Russell served proudly in the Army from 1970 to 1973, where he was a surveyor. He was also a longtime member of American Legion Post 24 and served on the Color Guard for many years. Additionally, he was a life member of AMVETS Post 3.
Russell worked at Illinois Power for over 30 years, earning retirement as a senior engineer in 2015.
He was preceded in death by four brothers, Terrance, Tobias, Jeffrey and Charles.
