Stephanie Brewer Alexander

SAVOY - Stephanie Brewer Alexander, 82, professor emerita of differential geometry at the University of Illinois and a fellow of the American Mathematical Society, died on Monday, Nov. 20, 2023.

She loved mathematics and was passionate about sharing this gift with her students. She participated in numerous math conferences worldwide and authored many publications, including co-authoring a book on Alexandrov Geometry in her retirement.

Born to Phyllis Brewster (professor of pharmacy) and David Brewer (architect and engineer) in North Hollywood, Calif. Stephanie was raised in Vancouver, British Columbia, and London, Ontario, where her much-loved stepfather, James Taylor, was a professor of business. 

She was a graduate of Mount Holyoke College and the University of Illinois.

She was married to the late John Ralph Alexander, also an emeritus geometry professor at the UI.

Stephanie and Ralph were passionate supporters of the wetlands and wildlife around the Sangamon River. She and Ralph also loved poetry and the arts.

She is survived by her sister and brother-in-law; nieces; great-nieces and -nephew; cousins; and amazing family friend, Dave Brayfield. We already miss her so much.

A private memorial service will be held at a later time.
