This is a loss for all the community of plant biology. It has been an honour and a pleasure to have the opportunity to know Stephen and learn from him.

I have interviewed many University of Illinois academic luminaries, but none quite like Steve. His phenomenal research will benefit farmers for years to come. I had looked forward to documenting his honors in October at the World Food Prize in Des Moines, and had visions of interviewing him as a Nobel Laureate someday. While his work will impact agriculture and global food needs for years to come, he will remain in the hearts of those who shared treasured moments with him. I have been a lucky one.
