Mr. McCollim passed away Wednesday, May 11, 2011, at the Slovene Home for the Aged in Cleveland.
Born Jan. 24, 1921, in Cleveland, he was a lifetime resident of Cleveland's east side, except for his years of service during World War II, having lived in Cleveland, Euclid, Wickliffe, Willoughby, and Mentor, before moving to the Slovene Home for the Aged in 2007.
He attended Collinwood High School and served in the United States Army during World War II, from September 1942 until February 1946. He was deployed in Germany and the Philippines. He was a lifelong fan of the Cleveland Indians and Browns and was an avid bowler and golfer.
As a church member, he helped build Willoughby Hills United Methodist Church in the early 1960s. Later, he became a member of Willoughby Baptist Church, where he had served as a Deacon. He was also a member of the Sheet Metal Workers International Association.
Mr. McCollim began his career at Barger Sheet Metal in 1938, before joining the Army. After his service, he worked for Harvard Sheet Metal and formed his own company, Euclid Furnace and Sheet Metal in 1955. He retired in March 1983, from the Robert Irsay Corporation, where he worked on the construction of the Perry Nuclear Power Plant.
He is survived by his sons, Gary (Ana) McCollim of Reston, Va., and Jeffrey (Stephanie) McCollim of Concord Township.
His wife of 56 years, Edith, passed away Sept. 13, 1998. His parents, Harry and Tessie (Ball) McCollim; and sister, Marjorie Sakach, are also deceased.
Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to8 p.m. Tuesday, May 17, 2011, at Davis-Babcock Funeral Home, 4154 Clark Ave., Willoughby. The Rev. Dr. Hazel E. Partington of Willoughby Hills United Methodist Church will officiate at the service. Final resting place will be in Crown Hill Cemetery in Twinsburg.

I worked side by side with Harry at the Perry Nuclear Plant. Harry and I were instrumental in taking measurements for final tie-in connections to HVAC equipment. Harry was the best! He was a great mentor and I have thought of him many times since I left Mentor in 1986.
Jeff, and Family, I am truly sorry for your loss.
When I think of Cleveland, OH, I will always think of Harry.

Sincerely,

Gary Crawford
