Robert Shafer Obituary

Robert "Bob" Shafer, age 78, of Mentor since 1976, formerly of Lyndhurst and Cookeville, Tenn., died April 25, 2012, at his residence.
He was born Oct. 22, 1933, in Cleveland.
A "Latin Man," Bob graduated from Cathedral Latin School in 1951. He received his business degree from Cleveland State University. Bob proudly served in the U.S. Navy in the late 1950s and enjoyed his time aboard the USS Newport News in the Mediterranean.
He worked for Gould Electronics for over 40 years, retiring as the director of corporate audit in 1999. He served on the board of G.I.C. Federal Credit Union for many years.
A lifelong artist, Bob focused on watercolor painting after his retirement. He took classes at the Mentor Senior Center and Lakeland Community College. He participated in local art shows and won several awards.
Bob was a member of the Creative Artists Association and the Eastside Irish American Club. He was a longtime member of St. Mary of the Assumption Parish in Mentor, where he was a Eucharistic minister, parish festival volunteer, and Renewal and Pre-Cana team member. He was a lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus through St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church in Cookeville, Tenn. He enjoyed traveling for business and pleasure, taking many cruises and excursions over the years.
The family would like to thank the Hospice of the Western Reserve and the Visiting Angels for all of their special care over the past months.
Survivors include his children, Judy (Tim) Schulz of Mentor, Mark (Amy) Shafer of Lakewood, N.Y., and Meg (Nick) Martino of Wadsworth; grandchildren, Samantha, Stephen, and Alex Schulz, and Ryan and Molly Shafer; and several beloved niece, nephews and dear friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 42 years, Mary McHale Shafer; parents, Herbert and Clara Shafer; sister, Betty Padden Fox; and brother, William Shafer.
Funeral Mass will be held 10 a.m. Monday at St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church, 8560 Mentor Ave., Mentor, OH 44060.
Family will receive friends 3 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Brunner Sanden Deitrick Funeral Home & Cremation Center, 8466 Mentor Ave., Mentor, OH 44060. Interment will be in All Souls Cemetery in Chardon Township.

It was an honor to be your friend. I enjoyed our lunches where I learned about the friendship you had with my dad. We will always remember the great times at my parent's New Year's Eve parties and I look forward to seeing you again when I'm called home by God.
