Frederick Carrington Phillips II

LTC (R) Frederick Carring-ton Phillips, II, born in Montgomery County, PA, in 1939, Fred became the son of Carring-ton B. and Mary (Pope) Phillips. He attended Harriton High School, Rosemont, PA, earned his Bachelor of Science in Business Administration at Drexel Institute of Technology and his Master of Science in Management at Rollins College. Fred joined the Army in 1963 and retired as a Lieutenant Colonel from the Pentagon in 1985. He had served three tours in Vietnam and received numerous Valor awards for heroism in addition to three Purple Hearts for injuries sustained during combat. During his 21 years of service, LTC (R) Phillips was awarded the Legion of Merit, the Bronze Star with 2 Valor Devices and 3 Oak Leaf Clusters, the Meritorious Service Medal, the Air Medal, the Army Commendation Medal, National Defense Service Medal, eight Vietnam Service Medals, Army Service Ribbon, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, Combat Infantryman Badge, Expert Infantryman Badge, the Army General Staff Identification Badge, the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry Gold Star, Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross Unit Citation with Palm, and the Republic of Vietnam Armed Forces Honor Medal First Class. He also attended various military and civilian schools while in the Army including the Military Assistance Training Advisor Course, Vietnamese Language Course, District Senior Advanced Course, Special Warfare School, Command and General Staff College, and the Inspector General Orientation Course. Following military retirement, he owned and operated small businesses in the Altamonte area, retiring finally from his partnership in a Maaco Autobody Repair. His life was enriched with his equestrian riding and teaching skills, horses, stamp collecting, stock investing, golfing, snorkeling, skiing and traveling the world, even mastering the fine art of cooking popovers. His hobbies varied over his life and his interests were eclectic as he always sought new experiences, but he loved his island, Stone Island. A leader in the community and active HOA member he served as its President and director for many years. He was frequently seen grading roads, building bridges, hanging out at the stables and teaching island "barn brat" kids how to ride. Fred refused to let his illness control his life. Over the past few weeks, with his beloved Norma, he went on a cruise to Rome, visited family and old friends in Washington, DC, and on the west coast of Florida, and attended his granddaughter's high school graduation in Texas. He never believed in living his life safely and so, even though his illness had greatly progressed, he embarked on his last trip to Las Vegas just a couple of weeks ago. Fred is succeeded by his wife, Norma, his true companion in life adventures. He leaves his daughter, Kathleen Heming and her husband, Jay Nardone, two grandchildren, Ian and Mikaela, brother George Siglin, sisters Susan Hendricks and Katherine Santino and several members of his birth family. He will be missed by his daughter-in-spirit, Katherine Leidenberg and her brother James Blythe and their families. Following cremation, a memorial service will be held at the Baldauff Family Funeral Home & Crematory, 1233 Saxon Boulevard, Orange City, FL 32763, at 11:00a.m., Saturday, August 3, 2013. Visitors are invited to the Phillips' home at 1440 Stone Trail, Stone Island, 1-3:00 that afternoon for refreshments. Interment will be at the family plot in Cleveland, OH.
