I was a student of James at Hunter College and he inspired in me a life-long interest in all things Asian for which I shall be forever grateful.

To the family: I remember James from the late 1970s when he was teaching at Hunter. What a fascinating and handsome man he was. I am sorry to have lost touch with him after about 1994 and was so sorry to read of his death. Marietta Whittlesey
