James A. "Jimmy" Teters

James Teters Obituary

Funeral service for James(Jimmy) A. Teters, 77, Sawtooth Lane, Ormond Beach, who passed away Sunday (July 5, 2009) at his residence, will be held Thursday at 10:00 am at Central Baptist Church, 142 Fairview Ave., Daytona Beach with Pastor Sunny Gallman officiating. Interment will follow at Flagler Palms Memorial Gardens. Friends wishing to call and pay their respects may do so Wednesday (today) from 5 until 7 p.m. at the Dale Woodward Funeral Home, 167 Ridgewood Ave., Holly Hill. A native of Bunnell, Jimmy was proud to be a Florida Cracker. He was a retired foreman who worked 30 plus years with Florida Power & Light. A US Navy veteran, he served aboard the aircraft carrier Philippine Sea (CV-47) during the Korean War. His memberships included the I.B.E.W. and Rivera Country Club. Jimmy coached football for many years, both flag football and midget football (now Pop Warner). He was passionate about following the athletic achievements and lives of those he coached. His attendance at high school football games was frequent. The outdoors, playing golf and fishing were important pass times and brought a great deal of happiness. Jimmy made friends easily, it didn't matter if it was on the golf course, the ball field or breaking bread. He loved hearing a good joke or telling one. The time he spent with his sons and grandsons was cherished. Jim was predeceased by his parents, Miller R. and Nellie Barcliff Teters and a brother, Benjamin R. Teters. In lieu of other remembrances the family suggests donations be made to Hospice of Volusia/Flagler, 3800 Woodbriar Tr., Port Orange, FL 32119. Survivors include 2 sons, Jim Jr. (his wife, Eva) and Robert L, both of Ormond Beach; his companion of 33 years, Elaine Dykes; 2 grandsons, James "Austin" Teters, III and Jay Evan Teters "Jet"; and the mother of his children, Elaine B. Teters, of Ormond Beach.

My memories of Coach Teters have always been fond. I remember Jim allowed me to be the water boy for my brothers (Danny) youth football team. I was probably 7 or 8 years old at that time, and I can still recall the excitement of helping Coach Teters and being part of his team.

When I use to play golf with my Dad at Riviera, I always looked forward to running into Mr. Teters. Whether it was on the driving range, the golf course or the 19th hole – it was always good to see Jim.

I live in Atlanta now, and unfortunately do not make it back to Daytona very often. I cheer for the Atlanta Falcons and have routed for Mike Smith’s success since he came to town (Go Green Waves!). I was listening to a radio station interview Mike Smith, when he first came to Atlanta. During the interview, Mike was asked if he recalls who 1st influenced his football beliefs and philosophies. Without missing a beat, Mike said “absolutely, Coach Teters”. He went on to explain how Jim's approach on coaching and life always resonated with him. I thought that was the coolest interview answer I had ever heard, and absolutely agreed.

Jim touched a lot of people’s lives in a very positive way! Thank you for being such a wonderful person, and for your kindness to me and my family. I feel fortunate to have known Jim and for the happiness that he brought into my Dad’s life, and the entire Cone family’s lives.

We love you Jim!

The last time I heard him able to talk, he spoke of camping trips to Mill Dam. He taught my children the difference between a kaboozle and a noggin, and what manners were. He and Elaine opened up their home and hearts to us. He had so much to tell he should have written a book(the good ole days). They are the best neighbors ever. I love his charm, whit and giggle (make ya slap ya mama!). Hey Jimmy, I got some chicken--you wanna neck!

Reader's Digest used to have articles callled "My Most Unforgettable Character" and Jim was certainly worthy of that claim. I will always remember how much my family and I enjoyed his presence.

A GREAT GUY! HE WILL BE MISSED BY MANY. I ALWAYS LOOKED FORWARD TO SEEING HIM, BUT IRONICALLY IT WAS USUALLY AT THE SERVICES OF MUTUAL FLAGLER COUNTY CRACKERS, JUST SHOWING HIS LOVE FOR FELLOW MANKIND. YOUCAN BE PROUD TO BE RELATED TO HIM.
