JOSEPH LIEHR Obituary

Joseph Thomas Liehr Jr. (known as Tom), 71, peacefully passed away on January 22, 2013 at the Health Center of Daytona Beach after almost 5 months of fighting GLB grade IV brain cancer. Born in Terra Haute, IN and an alumni of Ball State University, Tom was the son of Joseph Thomas Liehr Sr. and Mary Ann Liehr of Muncie, Indiana. In 1965, Tom became a federal agent with Naval Criminal Investigative Service but was drafted to serve in the US Army shortly after. Tom was stationed in Heidelberg, Germany, where he met his wife, Sharon in 1968. After serving in Vietnam, Tom left the army and rejoined NCIS. Tom's first overseas station was to the Philippines, where they adopted their only daughter, Jaymii. Tom often requested to be stationed overseas, which allowed the family to live in countries like Cuba and Japan and to visit others less travelled. In 1992, Tom retired from NCIS and moved to Daytona Beach, FL. Retirement wasn't as fun as he thought it would be so Tom entered law enforcement once again and worked as a probation officer for 2 years until the office closed in 1998. Tom loved visiting with old friends and many of his former agents came to Daytona to see him. He was an avid story teller and enjoyed going to the range, spending time with his animals, and watching NASCAR races. Tom is survived by his wife of 42 years, Sharon Liehr (Werner) of Daytona Beach (formerly of San Antonio, TX); his daughter Jaymii Liehr of Asheville, NC; his dogs Kody and Mini, and many friends and relatives. Tom didn't want anyone to feel sad when they thought of him and requested there not be a service. In lieu of flowers, he has requested a donation be made to the Brain Tumor Research Foundation, 116 Smokehouse Ct, Newark, TX 76071 or www.braincancerresearchfoundation.com or to the Halifax Humane Society, 2364 W. LPGA Boulevard, Daytona Beach, FL 32124 or www.halifaxhumanesociety.org. Condolences can be sent to the family at [email protected]. The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to the amazing staff at Health Center of Daytona Beach and to Halifax Hospice for their diligent and loving care.
