Leo Lanzon Obituary

Leo Lanzon

Bunnell - Leo Lebert Lanzon passed away on June 18, 2021 at AdventHealth Hospice Care in Palm Coast, FL at the age of 76. Leo, the oldest of 6, was born in Detroit, Michigan to Leo and Germaine Lanzon on December 1, 1944. Leo grew up in Hazel Park, Michigan. His Dad owned automotive paint and body shops in nearby Detroit, and in those shops Leo's lifelong fascination with cars took root. He hung out at the body shop every chance he had and started painting cars as a very young teen. He absolutely loved painting vehicles of all types. Detailed work and perfection were a must. He would often say if you think it's perfect, you haven't missed very much, always give people more than they expect to receive, and do things right the first time.

Leo took a break from the body shop to serve his country in Germany and Vietnam. He often spoke proudly of his time served in the U.S. Army. Leo said his tenure in the military was the best job he ever had.

After Leo returned from Vietnam, he decided he had enough of the Michigan winters. He and a friend rode their motorcycles, another passion of Leo's, to Florida. Eventually he settled in the Daytona Beach area and shortly thereafter opened Autocraft Paint & Repair. His shop specialized in expert paint and body work and automotive restorations for over 40 years. During that time he amassed a large number of loyal customers and trusted friends. It wasn't uncommon to drive by the shop well past 5 PM and find one or more customers turned trusted friends hanging out in the office with Leo discussing cars, life's ups and downs, or a combination of both. His office could turn into a classroom in an instant. If he was in a teaching mode and you were paying attention, you could walk out of the office a far wiser person than when you entered. Many times you would swing by with a car question and leave having a completely unrelated life problem solved.

Leo was a private person, but once he felt comfortable, he blossomed like a flower. He was wonderfully deep with many layers and truly had a heart of gold. He paid attention to you and what was going on in your life. Many times that attention led to a unique nickname that made you feel special. His kindness and attention, however, did not stop Leo from being brutally honest if the situation called for it. You always knew where you stood with him.

Leo's pets were as important to him as the people he cared about. He never met a dog he didn't like. He had a special affinity for boxers and later in life, his attention turned to pit bulls. He was involved with Boxer Rescue for years. To keep his dogs on their toes, Leo was a great Dad to several cats as well.

Leo is survived by five brothers and sisters....his beloved sister Beverly, brother Ed, and as Leo referred to them, The Three Stooges....also several nieces and nephews, and too many friends to name.

Leo will be sorely missed. His impact was far and wide, and all who knew him are enriched from the privilege. A service will be held at a later date at the Cape Canaveral National Cemetery, Mims, Florida.

Leo was a great friend that I have known since 1954. His family lived across the street from us on Muir street in Hazel park we would walk, or ride our bikes to school until we got our first cars. Leo´s first car was a 1955 Packard. That was a fixer upper when he got it, but when he finished it looked like a new car. I was A few months older than Leo so I got my license before he did. His mom let me drive it to school she thought but when we got around the corner Leo made me turn it over to him, we did that until leo got his license, I am sure she caught on to us.
I could write a book on our friendship over the years and his love for Fast cars. Woodward Ave. and eight mile rd were made for Leo to race on.
This has been a tough two months first I lost my brother Jimmy on April 26th, then my good friend Eric Miller, and now Leo Lanzon in June.
God Bless them All!

My dad worked at Leo SR´s shop for many years and our family spent a lot of time with the Lanzon family. Affectionately known as Little Leo, he was always so great to my parents...so thoughtful...always keeping in touch with them. Even after my dad passed, he would still call my mom to check up on her. May you rest in the arms of God. Thank you for being such a great guy. Sending love, hugs and prayers to my dear friend, Bev and brother, Ed.

Dear Leo, you´re one of a kind! May you Rest In Peace. I am SO very grateful for the wonderful friendship, you´re our chosen family too.
My dad, "Santa" probably didn´t tell you, but I sure will, I´m brutally honest like you! My father is PICKY & QUIET ab who he feels are his true, dear friends.. but he never tried to conceal it w you, his brethren, Army buddy & man of honor. Thank you for being a true friend, they are so rare.
Your KINDNESS to The Corr family made dreams come true again, when your shop painstakingly worked w us on Our `73 Nova 3.0 - mostly dad lol, but I got a vote here & there! That car was driven on Daytona International Speedway; dad gave ME the keys that day. Many ppl crossed my mind that day, including yours.

My dad´s parents were the original owners & it´s the last car they bought. You knew my dad, and your shop produced an absolute legacy, a masterpiece! Every time my dad washes & waxes the Nova, I say thank you Leo, an amazing part of our lives.
Gratitude for being the real deal, true American hero.

You shared your friends, always made me laugh & feel welcome. It was more than my pleasure to meet you. It was my honor, sir. In loving memory of an extraordinary man. RIP Leo. Love you Leo, we miss you already. All my best to your nearest & dearest.

Leo turned me and my 1972 Buick Cenutrion down as a customer the first time I came in.

Despite having worked on my father's antique cars on cars for years, his opinion was that he didn't want the hassle of dealing with somebody who was just on their first classic car.

He also hated the wheels on my Buick (they were spoke wheels, not the original mags he preferred, and he never let me forget it).

Eventually I persuaded Leo to work on the car after a couple more visits to his shop. He grudgingly took on the work.

When I got the car back, the busted front fender looked perfect, and he (without my asking) polished up the Centurion logo, and removed my (aftermarket) radio antenna because he didn't think it matched the car. Whether I agreed or not, he did what was right for the car.

In the years since, I got to know Leo and stopped by his shop with my Dad from time to time.

Leo was hilarious in his own dry, funny, and outright grumpy manner. I had a lot of laughs with him and will miss his banter, skeptical glares, and craftsmanship.

Rest in peace, Leo- you were a one of a kind and will be missed!

Leo was an extremely straightforward Man. An extraordinary listener. He kept me on my toes with meaningful banter. He helped me appreciate the little things and reminded me of my blessings. I'm sure he's relieved now and finally at peace. God Speed Leo

We have know Leo from about 1976 when he first came to Daytona and had a paint and body shop, as well as a used car lot on Volusia Avenue. We have followed him around from shop to shop in both Ormond Beach and Holly Hill. We had lots of good times and laughs together. Going to dinner and car show events both locally and in the Orlando area. Exchanging Christmas presents, etc. Leo was always a gentleman and the local automotive aficionados will surely miss his expertise and workmanship. Here are our 1972 Corvettes that he detailed for us. R.I.P. friend.

Here is a photo of my 1966 Mustang GT. Leo made the emberglo paint really pop. He certainly was a craftsman.

Here is a photo of my 1957 Chevrolet Bel Air two door hardtop. Leo turned it into a Antique Automobile Club of America, Senior National winner. A little paint here and there. He always detailed our cars before a show.
