Martin Pepus Obituary

Martin Pepus, M.D., 73, Bozeman, Mont., passed away from brain cancer April 10, 2008. He was born April 2, 1935, in New York City, N.Y., to Nathan and Dorothy (Stern) Pepus. At age fourteen, Martin moved with his family to Mi-ami, Fla. He was a graduate of the Miami High School, the University of Miami and the University of Miami Medical School; as well as Central Michigan University in Graduate Studies. Martin was a Captain in the U.S. Air Force, serving as General Medical Officer in Ogden, Utah. He worked as a Pathologist for twenty-eight years, and served as president of Volusia Pathology Group in Daytona Beach. While in Daytona Beach, he started a pre-school for mentally handicapped children. He married Erin Griffin on Jekyll Island, Ga., on December 2, 1989. They retired to Bozeman, Mont., in 1993 where he volunteered with the Wellness Community as facilitator of the Prostate Cancer Support Group, HIS Soup, and Com-munity Health partners. He loved to fly fish (though was no threat to the trout); enjoyed traveling with his wife; and shooting trap with the Old Fort Trap and Lunch Bunch. He was a certified "Memphis in May BBQ" judge, having judged the World Championship twice. He was a reader of philosophy and religion. Martin was a member of the Bozeman Zen Group and Congregation Beth Shalom. He enjoyed attending church with his wife at St. James Episcopal Church, and listening to Father Clark Sherman preach. He was preceded in death by his parents; and a niece, Erynn Eloise Reaves. Martin is survived by his wife, Erin; daughter, Juliana (Bill) Toohey; sons, Gregory (Ellen) Pepus and Glenn Pepus; grandchildren, Hannah Pepus, Noah Pepus and Victoria Toohey; sisters, Judy (Stu) Feder, and Joyce (David) Kliegman; sister-in-law, Edie (Jeff) Keith; and nephew, Konnor. He is also survived by numerous other loved nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephew, and many treasured friends. A private family memorial will be held. There will be a Celebration of Life at Riverside Country Club from 3 p.m. until 6 p.m. Saturday, April 26. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to either Bozeman Deaconess Hos-pice, 931 Highland Blvd, Ste. 3200, Bozeman, MT 59715; or to the Wellness Community, 1820 W. Lincoln, Bozeman, MT 59715. Arrangements are in the care of Dokken-Nelson Funeral Service.
