Philip Mirino Obituary

Philip Mirino, born on July 5, 1935 Went with Jesus on June 12, 2016. Today, our community mourns the loss of a prominent Christian business man Philip Mirino. Mr. Mirino lost his life suddenly, Sunday morning, June 12, 2016, in a car accident in Deland. Born July 5th 1935, in the small town of Torre Del Greco, Italy to Giovanni & Nancy Mirino. His father served in the U.S. Army during WWII. In 1947, his father sent for them, on June 21st they arrived on Ellis Island. They settled in Brooklyn, NY and eventually relocated to Long Island, NY. In 1974, Phil relocated with his current wife Mary Lou and two children to DeLand, FL. In September 1976, he and Mary Lou opened Mirino's Bakery & Deli and a few years later added Pizza. To his immediate family, he was known as Dad, and Poppi, but to everyone else he was known as Uncle Philly. He was devoted to his family, a faithful husband, father, grandfather, uncle, brother, and friend. We reminisce about his laughter, and unintentional funniness, at times he still spoke "broken English" or in his own "Uncle Philly" dialect. To those who knew him in our community, he led the life of a well respected Christian Man. Anyone who met him knew he was a Christian without any words being spoken, however he unashamedly shared the saving gospel of Jesus Christ with everyone he met & never hesitated to pray for someone. Phil never forgot where he came from and helped everyone he could. His generosity and humility were evident to all. He also never forgot how war time was and what it was to be hungry. Anyone who said they were hungry, he fed, no questions, no judgement. He leaves a legacy of his generosity towards others, and biblical values. Many lives were touched, and changed by his compassion, and faith. Our family lost a great patriarch, but Heaven gained a faithful soul. The Lord said, "Well done thy good and faithful servant, you were faithful over a few things. I will make you ruler over many things. Enter into the joy of your Lord." Matt 25:21. He is survived by His wife Mary Lou of 48 years, and children; daughters Marguerite Hancock and her husband Joel of DeLand; and Nancy Mirino of Las Vegas; sons Philip Mirino and his wife Heather of DeLand; and Michael Mirino of New York; grandchildren Micah Mirino, Joel Hancock, Jonah Mirino, Dominick Hancock, all of DeLand; and several nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made to Visitation House in DeLand or St. Peters Homeless Outreach. The family will receive friends at St Peter Catholic Church on Friday, June 17th, from 12-3 pm and 7-8:30 pm with a Celebration service. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday at 10 am, graveside to follow. You are invited to share your memories with the

I am so sad about losing my Poppi and wish I could have said goodbye! I will never forget Poppi's prayer cross and when he showed me that my picture was on it and he said he had been praying for me before he had even met me! You touched my life Poppi, as you did many others. I will never forget when u and MaryLou came to visit me down in Okeechobee and u told me u believed in me and that Jesus loved me. So many fond memories I have of a truly one of a kind man. I miss you...and will continue eating at Mirino's and praying that I can change through the power of Jesus, as you always told me I could. I love you Poppi and I miss you!
