Philip Toscano Obituary

Dr. Philip Toscano
May 15, 1950 - May 20, 2020
Dr. Philip George Toscano, 70, left this physical world Wednesday, May 20 after a year-long battle with cancer. Dr. Toscano worked his professional life as an optometrist and retired after 15 years from LensCrafters. Though a resident of Daytona Beach for many years, Dr. Toscano was born in Vienna, Austria May 15, 1950.
At age 10, he immigrated with his parents to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He lived, studied and worked in many places including Miami and California. He holds degrees from the University of Miami and his doctorate is from the Philadelphia School of Optometry. Many faculty and students from Daytona State College will remember Dr. Toscano's smile and contributions to class discussions. There he studied French, German, Italian, Spanish and other subjects. His love of learning provided him endless energy.
Dr. Toscano loved to live a healthy life style which led him often to the gym. It also led him to the open road where he spent some of his fondest moments with friends riding motorcycles through the mountains of Colorado, the highways of Wyoming, North and South Dakota, and the Pacific Highway of California. No one who knew him would be surprised at the Harley-Davidson in his dining room.
His was a life of giving and service – often done privately. For the community at large, he was involved in the LensCrafters charitable organization One Sight that provides free eye exams. For the homeless, in addition to the free eye exams, he provided clothing and meals. For fellow students, he tutored and lent explanations in a friendly one-on-one way. Ultimately, he gave his very self to be used for cancer research. "Greater love has no one than this, than one lay down his life for his friends." (John 15:13)
Dr. Toscano is survived by his loving wife Jeanine (Lhulier) Toscano, step-daughter Erin Jones and step-mother Millie Toscano. Childhood friends who were like brothers to him are Andrew Barbaro, John Mascaro, Paul Fioravanti, Peter Tague and Steve Mallach. He was pre-deceased by parents Joseph and Christine Toscano and step-son Dylan Jones.
In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made in his name to cancer research. The family will host a celebration of his life after his ashes are returned.

You will always be the love of my life! There isn´t a day that goes by that I don´t think or cry or laugh at my beautiful husband! He was one in a million! My heart is broken that we didn´t have more time. They say that grief is all of the love you didn´t get to give. I miss him every day & he was the sweetest person a woman could have as a husband & he had so many friends that were his family! We all loved him!

It's been five years since you left, but you're never forgotten for the person you were. You were intelligent, kind, giving, compassionate, and easy to talk with. You helped so many people through your years and never had a bad word to say about anyone. You were one of a kind. When we moved to FL in 2001 and went to you for our eye doctor, it turned out that we were so blessed to have had you as our eye doctor, and you became our dearest friend. I feel beyond blessed that we were able to be a part of your life and spend so many good times together. You are sorely missed by so many wonderful people. You are now an angel in heaven.

Dr. Phil was one of the finest men I’ve ever had the privilege of knowing. His positive attitude and generosity were an inspiration to me. I miss him and wish I could have one more opportunity to share a laugh with him.
I believe I can speak for all who knew him and were able to call him their friend that we were better for the experience.

I met Phil at Fort Hill Apts in Fort Washington PA when I was eighteen. Richie Erwin lived there also and he and Phil were lifelong friends. Richie and I hooked up and moved to John Mascaras place in Jenkintown pa. Phil was always there. Phil did not have a sister and I did not have a brother so we adopted each other and considered ourselves real siblings through our lifelong friendship. When Phil and Lynn were in Miami going to school we went down. Also when they moved to Leiper st in pa. Then Richie and I moved. To the farm in Quakertown
and the Poconos and Phil spent lots of time with us at both places. My son Miles loved Phil and Lynn. (Phil's first wife) he loved Phil taking him for rides in his green Porsche on the winding mountain roads. We spent time in Atlantic City all together and made lots of memories. We liked to go to the beach and boating. I have some great pics of Phil out in the boat but for some reason I can't get them on here from my photos. I will keep trying. Then Phil would go to Ca. And eventually moved to the house he bought in Daytona. Phil was a gentle soul a man who had more personalities then the average bear knew. We always enjoyed our time spent together. Phil, my brother, you will live on in my heart forever. Love, your Seeeester (as you used to call me) Andrea

It saddens us to have lost a valuable member of our team. Dr. Phil Toscano was our doctor in the Daytona Beach location and he has been an integral part of DPA for 5 years. He cared for his patients deeply and because of that he had a devout patient following throughout his career. Almost every year he would take time to ride his Harley across the country and he would return eager to share his adventures with Dr. Perez and staff. Over the years, Dr. Toscano and Dr. Perezs relationship evolved from a professional partnership to a true friendship and they would spend the years texting and sharing photos of their travels. We are thankful that during his last days, Dr. Toscano and Dr. Perez had the opportunity to once again talk to each other, laugh, share their appreciation, honor their friendship, and say their good-byes. -Dr. Perez & Associates

Forever you will be in our hearts!

Mike just informed me our old, dear friend has gone. Ours is a friendship from Stockton College almost 50 years ago. Phil was among my first circle of friends at the Mayflower Hotel. As I read wonderful snippets written by his friends I see he changed little. His kindness, humor, caring lasted all his life. He loved animals, working out, his cars and bikes, music and his friends. I vividly recall roadtrips with Phil and John Mascaro up to PA where I met the cast of characters within his orbit. I still have the Cat Stevens album he shoplifted for me...being students we had no money. We were in touch over the past several years and I was overjoyed seeing he finally found 'the special one'. I treasure his memory, never to break apart, and will celebrate his love of life when he crosses my mind. Tonite, I tip a glass in your honor, old friend. You did good things with your life. Now rest easy on the tide.

I First met Phil in the fall of 1973 at Stockton State College in Pomona, NJ. We were both studying science, took many of the same classes, and became very good friends. I was immediately impressed with Phils easy-going attitude and how effortlessly he seemed to master the course work. Working with him definitely helped me become a better student. We also spent a lot of time together in the gym and partying. I will always remember a road trip we took to Key West during Christmas break in either 1974 or 75. After almost 40 years, I was fortunate enough to reconnect with Phil and meet his wife, Jeanine, in the spring of 2017. We picked up right where we left off and our friendship seemed just as strong as it was in college. Phil was an extremely warm, kind-hearted soul and I will miss him deeply.

It was an honor to be a patient of Dr. Toscano. It was an honor to work for Dr. Toscano at LensCrafters. But... the greatest honor of all is being able to call Dr. Toscano my mentor. I have been blessed to have had Dr. Toscano by my side this far into my journey of becoming a fellow optometrist. The summer before his diagnosis I came back from optometry school to work at his store. We spent days talking about his life journey to how he got to where he was today, he gave advice for the present and shared excitement for my future. That summer he gave me his trail lens kit that was actually passed down from another optometrist before him. I will always cherish this gift and cant wait to use it daily when I get licensed. I will hopefully get to then pass it down to another passionate and giving future optometrist, sharing all of the memories and advice from those before.
Not only was Dr. Toscano one of the most prestigious optometrist in the area based on his knowledge and skills, but he was known for being one of the most genuine human beings. The one word I would describe Dr. Toscano in would be compassionate. If it was up to Dr. Toscano he would give free eye exams to everyone that walked in the door. He took his time with each and every one of his patients to build a personal relationship. He not only talked them step-by-step through their routine eye exam, but also lent his shoulder for those to lean on and both ears to just listen.
Dr. Toscano is missed by so so many. I always pictured one day Dr. Toscano sitting in my exam room so I could do his eye exam. He taught me so much and I will forever be grateful. For those who were blessed to have worked with Dr. Toscano will understand that tonight I will enjoy a Lindt chocolate truffle in his honor.

Phil - I can't think of you without tears rolling down my face, for not only the loss of you but for the pain that I can't even imagine Jeanine is facing right now, without her love there to comfort her and somehow have the right words, the right touch, the right actions, to make it ok even for a moment. The loss that she has suffered makes you question so much in life and spirituality.

Phil - you were literally the most calm, selfless, and genuine people I have met in my life, I will never ever forget what Jeanine and you did for me, and showed me what true friendship looked like. Every time I would see you you would give me a kiss on the forehead and it was a gesture that meant so much to me, it provided comfort, and was a fatherly gesture when that is what I so needed during that time. You made me laugh like no other, and you and Jeanine made such a great pair, a ying and yang if you would say, Phil the calm, thoughtful type, and Jeanine, well....if you know Jeanine ;), I can still see the looks on her face when he would say something to her that she didn't agree with or thought wasn't up to par with the sense of urgency that was needed for the situation, her eyes would roll sideways and her lip turn up just a bit, before turning to him and sweetly saying "ok honey", and being the most adoring, loving wife to him...it was true love, and they both deserved that so very much. Phil, I know you're up there, giving Dillon someone to talk about cars to and share some great stories I am sure you might has missed telling him during his time on this earth.

Phil - You were so loved, by so many, but I am so thankful to be on that list.

J - I love you

When we first met Phil, we knew he was the one for our daughter. They were so compatible , even worked for the same company. They never became a couple until one stormy night things were slow and Jeanine & Phil sat and talked the night away. That was the beginning of her happy life. They married in Jamaica. You never saw a happier couple . We were thrilled to be with them on their special day. Whenever they were around, there was always laughter and tears of joy. Life is a journey, we just don't know the future. For Jeanine & Phil, it was a short journey, but we will always remember Phil's smile and the guy we all loved!
Rest in Peace Phil!

Phil meant so much to us because of how happy he made my sister. He had a larger than life personality and an infectious laugh and smile. The one memory that makes me smile is when Jeanine and I would talk on the phone in the mornings I would ask where Phil was and he was always at Yoga and we would laugh! We are grateful for the time that Phil was in our lives, even though it was too short. We will be sure to take care of your honey pie!

First met Phil in 1990 when we interviewed at the Pennsylvania College of Optometry. We became friends immediately and spent the next 4 years grinding away with studying and also having fun riding our motorcycles together and discussing life's ups and downs. Phil was like a big brother to me and I loved him very much. He was always happy and easy going. He was a good soul and always seemed to be able to calm me. After graduating Optometry school, we moved to opposite ends of the country (Phil moved to Florida and I transplanted to Arizona). I would see Phil at meetings every few years and occasionally talk on the phone. I regret not keeping in closure contact with Phil. I believe the last time we spoke on the phone was about 3 years ago. Until we meet again my friend, rest in peace. You will be terribly missed.

I have not been blessed with Philips (Phil's) friendship for long in the numerical sense but Phil was the kind of person that the richness of interaction and warm spirit made one feel as if they had known him their entire lives. With his easy-going nature, his sense of selflessness, his tremendous knowledge on a vast variety of subjects, and quest to not just experience life but to live it he was one of those rare people one meets in life that are kindred spirits.
Phi was always there for his friends whether that be with a joke to elicit laughter or a story (and he had some great ones) that always seemed to contain a hidden gem of a life lesson in them he was always there for the ones around him. Be it friends, family, or neighbor Phillip Toscano was a blessing. And that blessing I think every one of us here have experienced in one way or another. I feel privileged to have gotten to intertwine our life's paths even if briefly as the richness of experience more than made up for the shortness of duration. Phil, you will be missed, my friend.
