Robert Thames Obituary

Robert Ervin Thames, age 64, of Ormond Beach, Florida and West Jefferson, NC passed peacefully away in the loving presence of his family and longtime friend Mary Unson at 12:10pm on Monday, February 5, 2018. Bob was born in Bethesda, MD to Brigadier General William M. Thames Jr., and Bernice Self Thames on June 30, 1953. Bob lived in Ormond Beach for much of his life and attended Osceola Elementary school in Ormond Beach, Bolles Academy in Jacksonville, FL and graduated from Seabreeze High School in Daytona Beach, FL. He also graduated from St. Andrews Presbyterian College in Laurinburg, NC where he was actively involved in music, drama, and social networking. While at St Andrews he developed a close-knit group of friends who he loved deeply, and followed closely through his entire life. It was also at St. Andrews where his roommate, Bill Peterson, taught him to play the piano in return for harmonica lessons. Thus began a lifelong career in music that sustained him from that point, through the last days and minutes of his life. Bob also developed, at St. Andrews, a long-lasting love of the arts, and was a professional art appraiser, and at one time, an art gallery owner and curator. First and foremost Bob was a close friend, and musical partner to hundreds. He was an accomplished professional musician, a deeply loved uncle to his nieces and nephews, an admired brother-in-law, and cherished brother. Bob is predeceased by his parents, and also his loving sister, Nena Whittemore Fliegel. He is survived by his brother, William M. Thames III, sister-in-law, Patricia Leonard Thames, Brother-in-law, Robert Fliegel, Nephews: Alexander Douglas Whittemore, William M. Thames IV, and Troy Fliegel, and Niece Elizabeth Bernice Thames, and five grand-nieces and nephews, and numerous cousins. A Visitation with Bob's family will be held from 4:00-8:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 8, 2018 at Lohman Funeral Home Ormond, 733 West Granada Blvd, in Ormond Beach. The Funeral Service will also be held at Lohman Ormond on Friday, February 9, beginning at 1:00 p.m., with Pastor Brad Yates officiating. Burial services will take place at Oak Lawn Cemetery in Jacksonville, FL at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 10th, 2018. Seems like just yesterday you were in the studio making your last album. I enjoyed your music so much at the time and I still listen to that album at least twice a month. Thanks for the music and the apples!

Wow, looked for bob at aunt catfishes last week, missed him, just googled him and I get this shocker! Sure did enjoy our conversations every year at my favorite eating spot. What a kind soul. So glad I bought his c.d. Last year so I can keep the memories alive, thoughts go out to all his family and friends, sadly missed by your Virginia friends. Dennis Zimmerman

Bob, thank you for gracing us with your presence in this world and sharing your immense love of music and the arts. Your talent was a unique and a special gift to all of us. I have always admired and respected you. As a fellow musician, you always encouraged me, included me, and made me feel really special. I thank you for that. You were truly a kind, gentle spirit....the love and long-lasting bonds you shared with your family, friends, and fellow musicians is very evident and will live on in our memories forever. Missing you and sending my deepest sympathies to all of the family and friends whose lives you have touched.

Bob was an entertainer and lover of the crowd. I hadn't seen him in over 20 years and I walked into Aunt Catfish and got in the line. He immediately called my name over the microphone and said hello. This was while he was performing and posing for a photo.

Bob was always on the lookout for the next adventure, treasure, or friendship. He was fearless to introduce himself to anyone and seemed comfortable everywhere.
He remembered details and events with an uncanny accuracy and we shared hours of antique and art collecting that produced treasures due to his eagle eye.

He was a loyal friend. He was loved. He will be missed.

Bob was my neighbor for the last two years. We shared laughs, stories and music around the fire at our place. He was one of the best parts of moving to Ormond Beach. I never met anyone like him and I don't think I ever will again. A true one of a kind and a heart of gold. Im so thankful he took time out of his life to become our friend. I'll remember his humor and play his music for the rest of my life. Thank you Bob, I hope its amazing where you are right now.

I was honored to call you my friend for over 40 years. You were one of the kindest, funniest, dearest souls I have ever encountered. In a world that all too often is callous, crude, and cruel, you were gracious, compassionate, and generous. Thank you for being my friend in good times and bad. Farewell and Godspeed.

My sincere condolences to Bob's Family and Friends. Bob was a friend to all and could always console and find the right words to help one through any crisis or just to have a hearty laugh. Play on Bob....until we meet again...

My thoughts are with the Thames family and close friends! I had not seen Bob in years, but always hoped to see him again. Playing or just somewhere. That window is now closed, but he was/is a great guy and still will be part of memories of him! He was a great guy!

What can you say about a guy who was always there when the chips were down. Who could talk on the phone longer than any girl. Who was scary smart and wickedly funny. Who never forgot a Birthday. Who sent really good CD compilations to make reality more bearable. Who managed to touch so many lives so deeply? There. I said it. Life will never be the same.

Bob was so dearly appreciated in my life.. Being an artist I was truly complemented that he supported my art and even sat for hours while I painted him... He had a gentle and kind manner... so refined, and a person of great depth.
