Skip Waters

NEW BERN, NC - Beloved Eastern North Carolina meteorologist and television personality, Skip Waters, passed away on Tuesday, October 28, 2014. Known to his family as Harold Ray Waters Jr., Skip was born on March 17, 1953 in Greensboro, the son of Harold Ray, Sr. and Joyce. He graduated from North Fort Myers High School and the University of South Florida and worked as a Meteorologist at WEVU-TV 26 from October 1976 through April 1982. Skip returned to North Carolina in April 1982 to work at News Channel 12 where he was hired as the Chief Meteorologist, a position he held until his passing. He was always willing to share his love of weather with area schools and people in the region. Skip was an active member of First Presbyterian Church of New Bern, and was involved in many area celebrations, parades, and fund-raising activities. He had a soft spot in his heart for animals, having rescued many for himself as pets, and gave tirelessly to the Humane Society. Skip is survived by his mother, Joyce Amos Jones; his stepmother, Patsy W. Kanagy; sister, Anita Waters Bain and her husband, John, and their children, Lauren (David), and Evan. He also leaves behind his Aunt Vivian Kay Murray; Uncle Mac Amos (Maxine); step-brother James R. Kanagy (Kate); step-sisters, Christine Penczar (Andy), and Dianne Ammons (Sam). Sadly, Skip was preceded in death by his father, Harold Ray Waters, Sr., and step fathers David R. Kanagy and Herbert R. Jones, Jr. News Channel 12 will sponsor a public memorial to celebrate Skip's life and commemorate his contribution to our community on Saturday, November 8, 2014 at 2:00 pm at St. Paul Catholic Church, 3005 Country Club Road.
