THERESA CARTER Obituary

- Funeral service for Theresa "Mama-T" Carter, 94, Daytona Beach, FL, who died Mon., Feb. 28, 2011, will be 2 PM, Sat., March 5, at Mt. Mission Missionary Baptist Church, with Pastor Robert Lewis, Sr. presiding. Interment will follow in Sunset Memorial Park. Calling hours are Fri. (today), March 4, 5-9 PM at R.J. Gainous Funeral Home and from 12:30 PM until service time at the church on Sat. As one of 11 siblings born in Live Oak, FL, she moved to Daytona Beach from her birthplace in 1939. After retiring as a presser for a local dry cleaning company she determined that her true calling was caring for children. Many, many children passed through Mama-T's home and she believed that they were all a blessing unto her, as much as she was to them. Theresa accepted the Lord as her personal Savior at an early age and her joy in life was her love of God, her steadfast faith, her church, and her dedication to her family and friends. She was preceded in death by her daughter: Sonya; her grandson, Patrick; and 8 siblings. She leaves to cherish her memory, her sisters: Maggie N. Williams, Willow C. Robinson, both of Daytona Beach; two sons: Fred "Freddie" Williams, Sr., Michigan, Calvin Carter, Jacksonville, FL; daughter: Judith Wheeler, Oveido, FL; 10 grandchildren: Freddie Williams, Jr. (Edna), Michelle Thompson, Melissa Wheeler, Elijah Wheeler, LaQ'uitta Baker, LaToya Baker, Calvin Carter, Jr., Carrick Carter, Darrien Goodwin, Jr., John Henry, Jr.; 7 great-grandchildren, 4 great-great-grandchildren, a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Momma T was a Godsend for me and my family. We had some difficult times and Momma T stepped in and took care of my three daughters like they were her own. She fed them, cared for them and took them to her church every Sunday. My girls, Jill and Julie and Jennifer loved her as the "Momma" she was to them. Momma T was just a good woman through and through. Everything she did came straight from God to her heart to us folks that she helped through our lives. She will be missed by countless people but she lives on in our hearts with the lessons she taught by the way she lived her life. She never asked for a thing in return but boy, we sure loved her right back and then some. I love you Momma T and always will. I am glad you are home now and at peace.

Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his saints. 116 Psalms 15.

Mama T was a God Sent to me and my family. She kept my sons Todd, Ted and my daughter Joi for a good part of their lives. She was the kindest and most generous person that I have ever known. She was always available to lend a hand whenever one was needed.
I just want to thank God for her. She will be terribly missed. To her family, be encouraged that she is now with our Heavenly Father and is taking a well earned rest from her wonderful labors. May God comfort you as you walk through this valley of sadness.

My heart aches to learn of Mama T's passing, but I rejoice because I know she's at peace and she's at home. I have soooo many memories of Mama T. She was a MAJOR part of my life. She led me to Christ and she was there to witness me getting baptized at Mt Mission Missionary Baptist Church by Rev. Teasley. Mama T was a very very special lady and I will always hold her near & dear to my heart. I love you Mama T.

To the family of Ms Theresa Carwise Carter. May the grace of God be with you all during this time of bereavement. I had the pleasure of meeting Aunt Theresa probably in the early 1970,s. My grandfather, Dolphus Carwise Sr. (now deceased), is the brother of Aunt Theresa. I am also Teresa Carwise being named after my great aunt. I pray that you will celebrate the life and memories of this great legend. God Bless you all. Teresa Gail Carwise Boykins

Mama T was a blessing to my family. In the fall of 1983, my wife and I faced a dilemna for we were blessed with our baby daughter and had no one to keep her. Someone at church told us about this wonderful woman "Mama T" Wnat a blessing she was for us and our little Preemie daughter Kristal. Mama T nurtured her and she began to gain weight. We praise God for how Mama T touched our lives.
