David Magaw Obituary

David Curlee Magaw, III

David Curlee Magaw, III MD, son of Lucille and David Curlee Magaw II, passed away the morning of January 5, 2016 from complications due to Parkinsons Disease.

He was born in Detroit, Michigan, September 4, 1942, he attended Dearborn High School and later graduated from the University of Michigan and Wayne State University Medical School. He served in the Public Health Service in 1971-72 at the Springfield Medical Center for Federal Prisoners and also worked the emergency rooms of both Cox Medical and St. John's Hospital (Mercy). David was one of the first emergency room physicians in the country and he taught that specialty for several years at the Tucson Medical Center and Kino Hospital in Tucson, Ariz., after leaving Springfield..

In 1978 he returned to Missouri and bought a farm outside of Everton, Mo., where he fed chiggers and chased cattle. He became the first medical director at the Burrell Mental Health Transitions unit in the early 80's and is also remembered by people of a certain age as the physician at the "Old" Ash Grove Nursing Home.

In his younger days David loved to race sports cars and he helped finance the new home of at least one mechanic.

He will be remembered by his family members: wife Rose, sister and brother-in-law; Pat and Milton Fuhs and nephew Brian Fuhs, as a strong, funny and incredibly courageous man in the face of such a debilitating disease. His brilliance and fortitude will be sorely missed by them, his extended family and multitudes of adoring friends and patients.

A Memorial Service will be conducted at a later time. Cremation arrangements was handled under the care and direction of Wilson Brim Daniel Funeral Home Ash Grove, Mo.

Memorial contributions may be given, in his memory, to the National Parkinson's Foundation.

Dr. Magaw was my mother's doctor for many years at Transitions and was the most kind and caring Doctor I have ever met. He truly cared about my mother and because of his wonderful care, she lived a very happy life. He encouraged her and was kind to our family as well. We will always remember his kindness to our mother. He was a very special person.
