Edward "Huggy" Ellyatt Sr.

Bonita - Edward "Huggy" Ellyatt Sr., age 94, passed away Sunday morning August 9, 2020 at Joanne's House of Hope Hospice surround by his wife (Mary Lou, 93) and his two children (Ted & Terry).

Huggy is survived by his amazing wife of 72 years, Mary Lou, two children: Edward "Ted" Ellyatt Jr., and Terry (Elyatt) Klein. He also leaves behind three grandchildren, Janice (Ellyatt) Coleman, Chad Klein, Kelli (Klein) Ostrosky and 10 great grandchildren.

Huggy is a veteran of World War II, where he was a Plank Owner (original crew member) onboard the minesweeper, USS Dour. He was a Sonar Technician, responsible for locating enemy mines placed to damage or interfere with U.S. Navy Operations during the War. Huggy was born in London, Ontario and later moved to the United States. After completing his military service and earning his U.S. Citizenship, an accomplishment he took great pride in, Huggy joined the Detroit Fire Department. During his time in the Fire Department he held many different positions, ultimately retiring as a Lieutenant in the Rescue Squad. In 1975, Huggy and Mary Lou retired to Fort Myers Beach, FL. During his retirement, Huggy (and Mary Lou) continued to serve their community through their church as well as the Kiwanis Club. He also worked for many years at Sun Hardware and the Fish Tale Marina on Fort Myers Beach. Huggy and Mary Lou enjoyed a long life together, where they traveled extensively, loved sailing, and were always up for a cruise.

Funeral services will be held at sea, by the U.S. Navy, at a future date. Donations in memory of Edward "Huggy" Ellyatt Sr. should be made to Chapel by the Sea in Fort Myers Beach, FL (100 Chapel St., Fort Myers Beach, FL 33931).
