Howard Marks Obituary

Marks, Howard Benjamin Passed away in his sleep on July 19, 2009, while being cared for in a private home in Cathedral City, CA. He was born on February 10, 1912, to Nathan and Lillian (Miller) Marks in Pocahontas, VA. He was the eldest of two sons and is his survived by his brother, Joe. Raised in Knoxville, he attended the University of Tennessee for two years. In 1944 he married Marjorie Jeanne Liss of Mpls (daughter of Herman and Anne Liss). They settled in Mpls, where Howard became a manufacturer's representative for office furniture and equipment companies, until they retired to Palm Springs. Their children are Melissa Rolloff of Louisville, KY and Martin Marks of Somerville, MA. Howard was the quintessential "Southern" gentleman: kind and generous of heart, deeply humorous, thoughtful, and a shrewd businessman. His health remained strong until his tenth decade; even then he was determined to look after Margie. He has been laid to rest in Desert Memorial Park, Cathedral City, attended by the loving thoughts of family and friends.

Dear Margie, Missy and Martin - I just wanted to send my condolences in regard to Howard. I didn't hear until this evening that he died....given my mom's brain injury, I'm kind of out of the loop these days.

Howard was always such a lovely man, and I know my parents treasured your friendship over the years. Better neighbors could not be had, and we were fortunate to have been close to your family. At this stage of life, it becomes more apparent as to who one's true friends are, and undoubtedly, Howard will be missed as one of the most genuine.

Margie,
You and Howard were the first couple to welcome Nate and me to Palm Springs when we purchased our home in the 70's. We've enjoyed our friendship over the years and I will miss him.
Love,
Theresa Berman
P.S. Larry and I are returning to Palm Springs in mid-October.
