Jackson Hall Obituary

Dr. Jackson Osborn Hall

December 23, 2016

Jackson Osborne Hall, 85 of Fort Myers, FL passed away on Friday December 23, 2016. Jackson Hall was born, raised and schooled in Boston, Massachusetts area until he entered The Lawrenceville School in New Jersey for his high school years. Jack credited Lawrenceville with strengthening his lifelong moral compass in integrity and humility. He graduated as President of the school his senior year and had earned 12 varsity athletic letters, captaining the majority of those teams in baseball, soccer, and ice hockey. Jack's undergraduate degree from Dartmouth in 1953 included Freshman Ice Hockey, and 4 years of varsity baseball and soccer. He was elected to The All American Soccer Team, served as President of his fraternity, Chi Phi, and received The Dartmouth Cup at graduation 1953 for representing the best of Dartmouth values. An invitation to play soccer in The Olympics ended with self-inflicted knee injuries as these men trained themselves. Military service as a 1st Lieutenant in the Marines from 1953-1955 in Korea in radar/air control completed his tour of duty; for the Korean Peace Treaty was holding. He returned home, joined the Scott Paper Company sales team, and earned the Thomas B. McKabe leadership award his first year. Jackson met Cornell junior year student, C Kathleen Bennett in summer 1957. They became engaged and married at Christmastime when he learned he'd been accepted at Cornell's Graduate School. After completing both a master's degree and doctorate in higher education administration and finance, Jackson continued to work for Cornell in development and then as Executive Asst. to the President. His next post from 1975-1985 was in Eastern Kentucky as President of Pikeville College, deep in the heart of Appalachia. During these years he set the foundation for a full-fledged university with the founding of a Baccalaureate Nursing Program and graduate consortium's with other universities. The University of Pikeville is now one of the fastest growing schools with graduate degrees in medicine and business disciplines. By 1985 Jackson accepted a position with Eckerd College with a plan to stay and live in Florida with Kathleen for the rest of their lives. In 1988, he recreated his career into banking and joined Northern Trust Bank in Naples where he worked to retirement in 1998. Jackson Hall's obituary would not be complete without including his service to every community he lived in. Even in graduate school he served as Director of the Ithaca Youth Bureau, and then served as Chairman of the Tompkins County Mental Health Department and Chairman of the county annual United Fund Drive. In Florida his commitments to the non-profit sectors included 10 years of service on the Youth Haven Board in Collier County, with 3 years as President. Other boards included United Fund, YMCA, and SW Florida Symphony Orchestra. He is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Kathleen, and two daughters, Alison Hall Mauze and Megan Kathleen Hall. His son, Jackson O. Hall II, predeceased in 2005. .Additional survivors include Alison's husband, Michael and three grandsons: Christopher Collins, 25, Jackson Carmichael, 24, and Edward [Teddy] Laurence, 21. Son, Jackson O. Hall II's children: Adam Atherton, 33, Rebecca Lauren, 22, Jackson O. Hall III, 15, and Peyton James, 13. To Jack's beloved family:

I have the privilege of serving as the Director of Development at the Southwest Florida Symphony. In my early weeks of orientation, I reviewed many donor files which referenced Jack's name. It was abundantly evident that Jack loved the Symphony and everyone affiliated with the Symphony loved him! We are deeply grateful for his many years of commitment to the Southwest Florida Symphony -- as a board member, donor and longtime patron. He will be greatly missed.
