JOHN MULHOLLAND Obituary

John Henry Mulholland

December 11, 2011

John Henry Mulholland (Jack) was born in Charlottesville, Virginia on May 24, 1932 and died in Fort Myers, Florida on December 11, 2011 from a medical illness.

The son of Henry Bearden Mulholland, MD and Elizabeth Brown Mulholland, he attended elementary school in Charlottesville, Virginia. He then attended Episcopal High School, and is a graduate of Phillips Exeter Academy in Exeter, NH. He began his college career at the University of Virginia, attended the Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland and then returned to the University of Virginia, where he graduated in 1952. Jack was a member of the Phi Kappa Sigma Fraternity at UVa. His medical school training began at Duke Medical School and he finished at Johns Hopkins Medical School. Upon graduation, he joined the staff at the National Institute of Health in Bethesda, where he served for two years in Infectious Diseases. He finished his training as Chief Resident at Johns Hopkins and then became Assistant Dean of Medicine and Assistant Professor of Medicine at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine.

He was then asked to serve at Union Memorial Hospital, a community hospital in Baltimore, Maryland where he was Assistant Chief of Medicine from 1968 to 1972. He became Chief of Medicine in 1972, and over the next twenty years he initiated new programs and modernized many others. He remained at Union Memorial for the next twenty-three years maintaining a small private practice and following his passion for teaching, medicine and his interest in people of all kinds. As Chief of Medicine, he oversaw the training of hundreds of residents and interns. He retired from his work at Union Memorial in June of 1992 and went on to work for Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Maryland, and then Doctor's Health Organization. During this time he also played an important role on the Board for Health Care for the Homeless of Baltimore, helping not only to care for the homeless, but also to create an annual event celebrating the outreach of this organization.

In 2007, Dr. Mulholland and his wife, Parksie, moved back to Charlottesville, Virginia where he happily reengaged with his alma mater and attended numerous tennis matches in support of the University's tennis team, of which he was a member.

Dr. Mulholland was a member of many societies and took an active part in all that he chose to do in his life. He was elected to become a member of the American College of Physicians and served as their Governor for the State of Maryland for two years. He was the first recipient of the C. Lockard Conley Award in 1992, for significant contributions to resident education and research. He was then awarded the title of Master, in recognition of excellence and distinguished contributions to internal Medicine. As a member of the Clinical and Climitalogical Association, Dr. Mulholland enjoyed the festive annual meetings with doctors across the United States and was known for being especially gracious to new members.

Dr. Mulholland married Anne Parker Carroll in September of 1956. He is survived by his wife of fifty-six years and three children: Anne Randol Mulholland Benedict married to Benjamin Ward Benedict, David Bearden Mulholland married to Amy Wiley Mulholland and Dr. Jeffrey Mulholland married to Shannon McQuone Mulholland, PhD. He is also survived by seven grandchildren whom he adored: Lex, Parker, Jake, Thomas, Ben, Wiley and Henry. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Elizabeth Mulholland Gregg. Over his lifetime, he enjoyed playing tennis where he won many tournaments as a child and an adult. He competed on the tennis and swimming teams at Exeter, and was active on the squash and tennis teams at the Naval Academy and the University of Virginia. Later in his life, he and his wife became avid golfers and made friends wherever they traveled playing golf. He was an excellent gardener and could be found early and late stirring in beds of perennials and vegetables wherever he lived.

Friends are encouraged to join the family in celebrating Jack's life. Memorial services will be held as follows: January 6, 2012 at 2 pm at St. Hilary's Church, Fort Myers, Florida or February 18, 2012 at 10:30 am at The University of Virginia Chapel. Receptions will follow each of the services. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a contribution to the John Henry Mulholland scholarship fund in support of a student involved in the University of Virginia Men's Tennis program. This can be done by contacting Barry Parkhill at the University of Virginia at 434-243-3554 or mailing a check payable to the Virginia Athletics Foundation (specify Jack Mulholland tennis scholarship), P.O. Box 400833, Charlottesville, VA 22904-4833.

I worked at Johns Hopkins and Dr. Mulholland was the first Chief Resident with whom I worked. He was intelligent, optimistic, personable and was never too busy to teach a young woman how to navigate the bureacracy of a large institution. I learned how to be a "Hopkins lifer" from him and watched how he easily related to the academic community. I will always remember his kindness and guidance. My condolences to his family.

I had the good fortune to work with Dr. Mulholland for about 10 years at Union Memorial where I was Director of Marketing and Planning. My interactions with him were highlights of my time there. Professional, smart, helpful, optimistic, clear-thinking, and supportive, Dr. Mulholland was truly loved and respected by all of us. Ricki Baker

Parksie, I worked with Jack at BCBSM and Doctors Health. He was such a kind, gentle man. I am so fortunate to have known him. I am sure that he will be missed by many. I know that he is with our Lord in Heaven. There is no other place for someone like him! Heaven has a new, wonderful saint.
