PAUL SANDS Obituary

Obituary

Paul Alexander Sands, 58, of Fort Myers, FL, passed away on Wednesday, April 14, 2010 from cancer.

A proud native Virginian, Paul relocated to Fort Myers after spending four years pitching in the Chicago White Sox organization where Paul had been a first round draft choice. Since 1974, Paul had an award winning career in commercial real estate in Southwest Florida. He spent 20 of those years at VIP Realty. Paul was an active member in several professional organizations including; the Real Estate Investment Society (REIS) and the International Council of Shopping Centers (ICSC). He was a Commercial Investment Professional (CIP).

Paul loved his work; he was a great captain of his team and he took care of them like family.

Paul served his community as well, believing it was important to give back. He was on the boards of several prestigious local businesses and non-profits. These include: Commerce Bank of Southwest Florida, Cypress Lake Country Club, Greater Fort Myers Chamber of Commerce and the YMCA of Lee County. He was also heavily involved in the American Cancer Society's Cattle Baron's Ball, but was most famous for the Slaw Dog Invitational Golf Tournament which he co-hosted with Scott Fischer the last 13 years to benefit various local charities.

Nothing was dearer to Paul than his family. He was the cornerstone of their lives. He is survived by the light of his life, son: Charles Nicholas Sands of Orlando, FL; his dear friend Lisa Joy Sands of Fort Myers; his brother: Charles Duane Sands of Naples, FL; his sister: Kay Campbell Sands of Charlottesville, VA; his longtime companion Lana Vantine of Fort Myers; Nick's mom Marty Sands of Fort Myers and his brother from another mother Scott Fischer of Fort Myers along with his 4 favorites nieces, 3 favorite nephews, Aunt Opal, Uncle Dave and Aunt Betty Jo, Cousins Alex, Kelly and Annalie.

In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made to the Paul Sands Scholarship Fund through the Real Estate Investment Society to benefit a young commercial realtor.

Dear Sands Family and Friends,
You are in our prayers and thoughts at this time of your loss..
May our God surround each of you with comfort and peace.
Matthew 5:4 Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.
I have been looking for this for weeks and a classmate let me know that you were in Florida. I also had just found Paul on Facebook but we did not get to connect. I knew Paul from school days and really thought a lot about him. It has been 41 years since I have seen him. I'm sorry I didn't get to know you all. Yes he will be missed. I have given to the ACS for many years. Also donated to Locks of Love twice.
In my Father's house are many rooms; if it were not so, I would have told you.
I am going there to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you,
I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am.
You know the way to the place where I am going." -John 14:2-4

Paul was a tremendous force in our community. He served on the Chamber Board of Directors and generously (without being asked) supported the Chamber's efforts. He was a friend in the true sense of the word. His support of our area often went unknown, but he made a difference in the quality of life for many folks. He loved his family. He is missed.

To all of the Sands family and everyone that was dear to Paul, I am so sorry for your loss.
I am from Newport News, Va, Paul's hometown. Paul was my first serious boyfriend. We dated when he was in his early twenties and was playing ball.
I don't have to tell everyone that was in his life what a wonderful man he was. I had not had any contact with him in 36 years. I joined FB 2 months ago and found him on there and only 1 month ago he accepted my friend request. This was very touching to me. From everything I have read about him, in tributes to him, it sounds like his wonderful qualities just grew even more over the years.
Nick, I am so sorry for your loss. If you are anything like your Dad, I am sure that you are a wonderful man. Again, to all those that were close to Paul, my deepest sympathies.
Paul, everyone in your hometown of Newport News loved you and have the fondest memories of your charming good looks, sense of humor and wonderful personality and they are sad to see you leave us. May you rest in peace.
