RICHARD HAGY Obituary

RICHARD LEE HAGY

MARCH 17, 2011

Richard Lee Hagy, 64, of Cape Coral died unexpectedly on March 17, 2011. He was born September 13, 1946 in Lynch, KY. He received a B.A. from Georgetown College (KY) and M.A. from Union College (KY). As a linebacker for the Georgetown Tigers, Richard helped his football team win a National Championship. He began his professional career at Osceola High School in Kissimmee, FL . It was there where he met Nancy Hosier, whom he married in 1972. His passion for educating students never diminished. Richard served Lee County Schools for more than 30 years as teacher, coach, and principal at Riverdale and Mariner High Schools, the Alternative Learning Center and Mariner Middle School, where he was named Principal of the Year. He touched the lives of countless students and friends, but most important to Richard was his family. He was a loving husband and father and Special "Papa" to his granddaughters. He was an avid golfer, devoted soccer dad, and supported his family's interests with enthusiasm.

He will be greatly missed by his wife Nancy, daughters Jodi Jacoby (Tyran) of Pine Island, Jami of Lake Wales, and Jessi Delgado (James) of Apopka, his 2 granddaughter's Madilyn and Mallie, Mother Thelma Hagy, brothers Charles and John and sister Nancy. He was preceded in death by his father, Charles Hagy.

Visitation at Messiah Lutheran Church in Cape Coral will be from 2:00 - 4:00pm on Monday, March 21. A memorial service will follow at 4:00.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations for a Richard Hagy Memorial Scholarship Fund which will be established for high school students in Lee County.

Dean Hagy, I just learned of your passing. So sad to hear. You touched a lot of lives. You were hard on me but you always made sense and were soft hearted about the discipline. I hope your family finds some comfort in the lives you touched. God bless you all.

Richard Hagy was a man of quiet strength who touched so many lives. He will be remembered as a devoted family man and a hero to so many of those he "parented" in school and on the field. My life is better for having known him. May he rest in peace, knowing that so many will carry on his legacy.

To Nancy and the girls,
I was shocked and saddened by the death of Richard. I will never forget the friendship with Richard and the good times that I had with Richard in Kentucky, and on my visits to Florida. I still have pictures of Jodi sitting in my lap when she was in kindergarten. I will always remember going to UK games, and I will never forget my fun trips to your home. My thoughts and prayers go out to each one of you. I thought the world of Richard.

Mr Hagy was a kind and understanding man. I consider it an honor to have been on his faculty at Mariner Middle School. We all loved him, and it was a crushing blow to have him suddenly snatched from us last summer. I know he did not want to leave us. He stated to me that he knew he had a great faculty when he hired me. He loved the students at Mariner Middle and wanted to see them grow to make a positive influence on the world. ~Gayle Mullins, Cape Coral

Nancy, Jodi, Jami, Jessie,
The memories of the teacher, coach, friend and father will remain with all of us throughout the rest of our lives. Rich was the go-to person when we needed him most. Mariner High is a special place for the "original crew", a family that cared about our kids above and beyond the usual academics. His understanding of the adolescent persona was second to none.
Thanks for the memories, Richard...

My thoughts and prayers go out to Mrs. Hagy and family. I played for Coach Hagy in the late 70's and he had a big impact on my life. I coach high school sports today hoping that I can have the same impact on a young person's life as he has had on mine. He will be greatly missed by our entire Anderson Co. Bearcat family.

Nancy,
My heart goes out to you and your girls. During our early days in the 70's, we made many wonderful memories together. Remember when you and Richard moved to Ft. Myers and you lived with us until you found your first home? Jodi Leigh was just a little girl! Then there were our trips to Sanibel and of course all the football games! I am so glad I got a little time to visit with Richard when he was in Orlando a month ago. I see that one of your daughters lives here in Apopka...please contact me when you come visit. I would love to see you. I hope all the kind words that everyone has left gives you some comfort as you face the coming days. May God Bless and give Peace to you and your girls....Much Love, Jane

Nancy, Jodi, Jamie, and Jessie,
I know you have heard this often, but I don't think it can hurt for you to hear it again. Rich loved you all immensely. He loved to talk about you all and was full of stories about you. When I had problems with my daughters, he would share a story or two about his and Nancy's adventures raising three girls. He was always there to listen to problems with an open door and open mind. My heart hurts for you, but I just wanted you to know that you were always in his thoughts. Rest in peace Boss, you will be missed.

I worked as a substitute teacher at Mariner many times when Mr. Hagy was principal there. I was shocked when I heard of his passing. I had just seen him at one of the middle schools that day, and said "Hi". He was great to work for in my role as a sub, always with a sense of humor, and always that passion for the children whose lives he affected. He will be greatly missed.

Nancy..the memory of the two of you is forever etched into my heart and mind. How much I would have loved to know Coach as a grown man instead of just as a Junior in High School. That memory alone however is powerful enough to know that he had an impact on me that has lasted a lifetime. I hope to catch up with your family soon and see the wonderful things that y'all have done. I love both of you as only a 17 year old now 54 year old past football player and english student can. My heart felt sympathy..Gary Larson

Coach Hagy was my HS varsity head football coach 25 years ago. I suffered the lost of my father suddenly during high school, and Coach Hagy was there for me not only as a coach, but as a mentor and father figure. He helped throuh a very difficult time in my life and I am/will forever be grateful that he was there for me. I can remember his daughters being our "mascot" cheerleaders. What a wonderful legacy is left behind for not only his family but so many of the students and atheltes he poured himself into. You will be missed here on earth, but Heaven has a new Coach to celebrate the ultimate victory with! God Bless all of the Hagy family. Our prayers are with all of you.

My heartfelt sympathies to the Hagy Family. A wonderful man gone too soon. He hired me sight unseen when my teaching position at Gulf Middle was cut. He remembered, before I did, that I had taught Jodi at Caloosa Middle. I loved sharing with him the large football oil painting of my son, Ted, which hung in his office the last few years. We talked about whether Mariner High School would like it. We talked about our grandchildren. He so loved and enjoyed his little girls. We talked about retirement and looking forward to it. I was the lucky one.

Rich leaves us with wonderful memories of a kind, loving, honest, compassionate, and fun-loving man. His passing reminds us of the lyrics sung by the country boy in FOOTLOOSE: "There's one more Angel in Heaven, There's one more Star in the Sky." Rich's star shines brilliantly every night letting us know he loves us. Our love and prayers are with you all.
