Obituary
Robert G. Day, 65, of North Fort Myers, died unexpectedly on Sat., January 16, 1999 in Cape Coral. He moved to North Fort Myers in 1989 from Eliott, Maine. He was born in Brooklyn, NY, son of the late Everett and Betty Day, and was a graduate of Eliott High School in 1950. Mr. Day served in the U S Army Signal Corps. during the Korean Conflict and while stationed in Germany, played semi-professional basketball. He held a Bachelor's Degree from Gorham State Teacher's College (Univ. of Maine at Gorham) and a Master's Degree in Secondary School Administration from the Univ. of Hartford, CT.
He also held a Certificate of Advanced Graduate Studies from the Univ. of Hartford, and a Teaching and Superintendent Certificate from the state of Massachusetts.
Mr. Day was the Principal of Somers High School, Somers, CT. and at that time was the youngest Principal at the age of 28 in the state of CT. He was the Inaugural Principal of the Shepherd Hill Regional High School, Dudley-Charleton, MA., the Director of Technical Careers Institute (TCI), Windsor, CT.
After moving to Florida, he was the Supervisor of Sheltered Workshops, Gulf Coast Center, Buckingham, FL., until his retirement at the age of 62. He was a life long Mason and belonged to the Naval Lodge in Kittery, ME., a former member of the Elmcrest Golf Course, E. Longmeadow, MA., a member of the Sandbaggers, Mens Golf Asso., Lochmoor Country Club, N. Ft. Myers, where he carried a 14 handicap.
A member of the Cape Coral Power Squadron where he held a Seamanship rating and a member of the SW Florida Corvette Club. For the past 2 years, he had lived his dream, that of a live-aboard lifestyle on his 43 foot Gulfstar Motor Trawler, culminating in 1998 with a 7 month, 5,000 mi. cruise from Ft. Myers to New England and back. A dream fulfilled! "Vita Brevis".
He is survived by his wife, Paula Day, a daughter Linda Gengel, West Hartford, CT., son, Dr. Robert C. Day, Worcester, MA., 5 grandchildren and many loving friends and neighbors.
Memorial Services will be conducted on Friday, 5:30 PM at the Fort Myers Memorial Gardens Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Shepherd Hill Reg. High School Memorial Scholarship Fund in the name of Robert G. Day, C/O Office of the Principal, SHRHS, 68 Dudley-Oxford Rd., Dudley, MA 01571.
