As a young man, Roy worked for the Galperin Music Company on 21 Capitol St where he meets and falls in love with the beautiful Mary Lou Asbury. They were married on Feb 2, 1951 at Calvary Baptist Church following a reception at her parent's home Wylie and Lura Asbury. He began his newspaper career working in the advertising department of The Charleston Daily Mail newspaper.

In 1958 with two children they moved to the Space Coast of FL to work for The Orlando Sentinel. Roy retired from the Gannett Corporation/Today Newspaper in Melbourne. Also, in the 1980's he and his wife owned The House of Fragrance on Fifth Ave, Indialantic Beach. He and Mary Lou later moved to the SW FL area to be close to their adult children and families.

He was very happy when golfing with his golf buddies in Melbourne. He enjoyed bowling, too, obtaining a perfect score. Roy always loved a good joke and rooted for the underdog. The Central FL Blood bank honored Roy for donating over 10 gallons of blood, and the Melbourne area Chamber of Commerce honored Roy in 1976 for obtaining the most new members during their fall membership drive. He loved reading, crossword puzzles, cars and collecting coins. He watched the FSU and UF games with his grandsons who graduated from the rival Universities.
