John Herr Obituary

John Joseph Herr

December 21, 1949 - June 28, 2025

John Joseph Herr, a proud Army veteran and welder, and longtime resident of Amherst, Virginia, passed away peacefully at home on June 28, 2025, following a long battle with cancer. John was 75. Born to Milo Kendig Herr and Anna Kutschbach Herr on December 21, 1949, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, he was the youngest of two siblings. His sister, Maryanne Wuenstel, still resides in Pittsburgh. John attended the University of Pittsburgh and was a dedicated NFL fan. Go Steelers!

John was a combat veteran of the Vietnam War and was proud of his military service. His military decorations include the Bronze Star with the V for Valor, two Purple Hearts, the Vietnam Service Medal, and the National Defense Service Medal.

To people who knew him best, John lived his life on his own terms and always defended others who could not defend themselves. He overcame many obstacles and held a strong spiritual faith in the Catholic Church. John found unconditional love with his best friend and wife of more than 36 years, Nancy Hudson Herr. Those we love don't go away; they walk beside us every day. Rest easy, John, in sleep eternal and sing with the angels in Heaven.

Nancy would like to express her profound appreciation to the staff at Alan B. Pearson Regional Cancer Center in Lynchburg, Virginia, and Heartland Hospice for their dedication and great care of John. Per John's wishes, there will not be a formal funeral service. He will be interred at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Amherst. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in John's name to Wounded Warrior Project.

John was a special soul, with quiet, off the wall humor, quiet, that is, until the punch line, then hold onto your hats! He noticed everything, took the measure quickly, then waited to see what might be needed. He loved talking about every topic, and enjoyed learning new views. A wonderful yin to Nancy's yang. There were lucky to have found each other in the great sea of humanity. His heart will always be with us, which makes the rest of us quite lucky, as well.

John had a good heart at the core - even though he liked to provoke me with politics! - but always ready with offers of help, and genuine sympathy and kindness. A true man.

Nancy, I'm sorry to hear the news about John. It was an honor to spend even a little time with him. A little rough around the edges, but absolutely amazing stories and a kind heart buried in there. I am blessed to have met John.

Some of our fondest, and funniest memories of our time on Garland Avenue involved John. The first day we met him, he came into our backyard (right next to his) and introduced himself...and asked us if we had change for a 20. He was headed to church and said "I didn't want to put a 20 in the plate." Classic John! Rest in peace, my friend.
