Alice Nuzzo of Bedford, died unexpectedly Feb. 26, 2007. Her husband, Alphonso Franklin Nuzzo preceded her in death.
She is survived by her daughter, Karen Nuzzo and husband, James Jones, of Bedford; son, James Nuzzo and wife, Mary Nuzzo, of Franklin, Mass.; sister, Lois Francis and partner Dick Richardson of Ocala Fla.; and grandchildren, Goss Nuzzo-Jones, Garret Nuzzo-Jones, Erin Nuzzo and Sean Nuzzo.
The daughter of Alice Emma Fliegner and Charles Hasselbaum, she was born Aug. 5, 1928, in Providence, R.I. A graduate of Mt. Pleasant High School and Bryant College, she married in 1949, and lived in Cincinnati, Ohio, and Glenndale, Md. After being widowed she returned to Rhode Island, to raise her children as a single mother. She worked for Sealol, Inc. for 19 years as a payroll manager and after retiring, she moved to Bedford, to join her daughter. There she became known as the "Book Sale Lady" for the Friends of the Bedford Public Library, raising tens of thousands of dollars annually. She was well known in the community for her forthrightness and steadfast manner, as well as her endearing eccentricities. She loved horticulture, books, art, food and family.
In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Friends of the Bedford Public Library, 321 North Bridge St., Bedford VA 24523.
A remembrance celebration will be held at 7 p.m. Friday, March 2, at the Bedford Room, Bedford Central Library.
