His first job was laying tracks for the Blue Ridge Railway where his father was the Engineer and his Uncle Parker was the conductor. He realized early this was not for him. He had his own dump truck for a while, worked at Harvestore, Blue Buckle, American Cyanamid, and Nelson County Schools as Director of Transportation for 28 years. After retiring he worked part time as an EMS dispatcher for Nelson County. His greatest achievement and where he spent most of his free time was with the Rescue Squad. He was one of the founding fathers of Roseland Rescue Squad.

He and his wife Charlotte spent uncountable hours helping their community with Roseland Rescue and with Nelson Rescue. It was their passion and their joy. He taught many CPR classes,

First Aid and EMT classes. They both became paramedics before their volunteering ended. He spent many months doing rescue and recovery during and after the flood of 1969. He and his late wife Charlotte touched many lives and were touched by many lives as well. Through the course of his 87 years on this earth he was definitely a great person, friend and role model to his family and to his community.
