Dewey Sylvester Wood, 51, of Diggs Mt. Road, Arrington, died Wednesday May 23, 2007.
He was born July 28, 1955, in Schuyler, Virginia.
He was preceded in death by his two fathers, James Houston Allen and William T. Wright; a sister, Pamela Collins; and two sisters-in-law, Gladys Wood and Jane Wood.
He is survived by his soul mate and wife, Sarah A. Wood; and her dearest twin sister, Susan Bennett and her husband, Barry; two dear and special mothers, Louise M. Allen and Nancy L. Wright, both of Lovingston; two loving sisters, Ethel Allen of Palmyra, and Cathy Stratton and husband, Robert, of Charlottesville; seven special brothers, Harold Wood and wife, Pat, of Buckingham, Cecil Wood of Amherst, James Wood and wife, Monica, of Columbia, Md., Herman Wood of North Garden, George Wood and wife, Olive, of Palmyra, Steve Allen of Earlysville, Wayne Wright of Lovingston; and a host of endeared nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.
Dewey was a gentle giant. He was happy-go-lucky. What a big heart he had with that laugh and smile, which will always be remembered. He was a blessing to all who knew him. Children loved him.
Passionate about life, Dewey embraced it to the fullest having fun in everything he did. One could not find a finer carpenter, stone or brick mason, butcher, cow chaser, or woodcutter. He could fix anything that was broken. Anyone could see from his work that whoever taught him these things and much more were the best. And yes, he was a good cook and did windows. Oh, the stories he would tell about the many things he had been able to do and be a part of.
He was an avid athlete, baseball, football, basketball, track, horseshoes, pool, you name it. Horse back riding was also something he enjoyed and there were a many an infamous croquet game while at the Wright's. There were just so many things he enjoyed doing. Dewey and Sarah were blessed to be able to travel within the beautiful United States, and Canada, visiting friends. They hung out a lot with friends visiting, sharing meals, and enjoying music and memories of fun times throughout their shared lives.
Let's not forget his love for the outdoors, another passion Dewey and Sarah shared. And, it can't go unsaid what the James River Bateau Festival meant to him. One could not think of the Bateau festival without thinking of Dewey. The two were synonymous with each other. The bateaus were a part of his life for 20 years.
He was a Jaycee, a helper and a volunteer. There seems nothing this man couldn't and wouldn't do for anybody, as everyone knew him was aware. He was loved and he loved, a friend. We will miss your face, Dewey, but you will forever be in our hearts and souls. God loves you and so do we.
The family will receive friends Sunday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home and suggests that in lieu of flowers contributions be made to Habitat for Humanity, P.O. Box 338 Nellysford, VA 22958; or the Nelson Food Pantry, P.O. Box 253 Lovingston, VA 22949.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Calvary Baptist Church, Lovingston, with the Rev. David Blevins and the Rev. John Campbell officiating. Interment will follow in the Allen Family Cemetery, Schuyler.
