Dear Wood Family,
I am so sorry to hear about Dewey´s recent death. I knew him in the 70´s and 80´s when I was growing up in Nelson County. His obituary is such a beautiful and perfect tribute to the larger-than-life character I remember from my youth. I can´t imagine the pain and loss that you must be feeling to have lost such an amazing person. Please know that my thoughts and prayers are with you along with so many others, as we all grieve the loss Dewey.

My thoughts and prayers go out to Sara, family and friends. Dewey was a great person, whom I've known most of my life. Those of us who had the opportunity to know him feel very honored. I've known Dewey since I was a young child. He was always playing jokes and making people laugh. He had such a way about him that drew people to him. He always waved or yelled out "Hello Bev" every time I'd pass him on the road or would just see him out and about. I will always remember Dewey as the person who scared me to death while watching the movie "Carrie" at the Lovingston Theater (yeah a long time ago)and just as the hand came out of the grave, Dewey's hand reached down on my shoulder and I thought I'd have a heart attack. Whenever I would see him, he would always remind me of that night...He was always willing share his softball skills with us as well. Although we all have lost a friend, God has gained another great person. Someone who is up there in heaven smiling down upon us probably sharing those same ole stories he had told us over and over. Dewey, you are loved by so many people and God knows all of the good that you have done for community, family and friends while you were here on earth. Your goodness will continue on through our hearts and the memories you left behind. I pray that God will give Sara, the family and all of your friends, the strength, comfort, peace and understanding that can only come from the Master. May you all be blessed and Dewey, may you rest in peace.

Dear Sara and family,
I graduated Dewey in high school and tried to keep in touch with him over the years. He always had this contagious smile on his face and could always make you laugh. I know your grief--I lost one of his classmates and my first husband, Perry--these two special guys are having a wonderful reunion together in heaven. My heart goes out to you, Sara. My husband, Billy, and I met you at Tractor Supply one day just when we moved back here from Mississippi--don't really expect you to remember--but the main thing is that you are in our prayers and thoughts. Anything we can do, please let us know. I can be reached at Amelon UMC, Madison Heights, most of the time. God Bless, Cindy McCormick Messemore

Sarah, I have not seen you or Susan since High School(Class of 79) but felt the need to let you know that you and Dewey's family are in our prayers. Dewey always wore that contagious smile and was a gentleman. I believe a person's works speak for them, and Dewey has left a legacy. If only we all could love like Dewey. Just imagine what a wonderful world this would be. Cherish those precious memories and remember that Heaven has gained one happy soul. I'll continue to lift you and your family in prayer.

Sarah and family,
I went to high school with Dewey. I have been away from Nelson for about 30 years but did run into him several times over those years and Dewey was ALWAYS the same. Smiling, happy, laughing and contagiously making everyone around him happier. I will always remember that wonderful smile and those strong arms always wrapping you in a huge bear hug every time he saw you, no matter how many years it had been. We are all truly blessed to have known such a wonderful person. I know he will truly be missed. I only was around the two of you a couple of times but it was apparent how much he loved you. God be with you.

Dear friends & family of my friend Dewey;
I am now living in Iuka , Ms...and I will not be able to attend the services for Dewey.
Hopefully, you will remember me as " Coach Sellers", as I taught & coached @ NCHS during the years that Dewey was a student & athlete there.I don't ever remember him not smiling...even during hard football practices, during games we were struggling to win, and trying desperately to pass Biology with me as his teacher ( which he did !!). We played basketball together & against each other in lots of pick-up games down @ the Jr. High. Anybody remember those games ??!! what a blast....and my bother Kevin was in there as well.
After Dewey graduated, for some time, he was active, with Kevin, in the VA. JCs...I moved away to Harrisonburg, then later to Maryland to start working with Hercules Aerospace, and still am doing that.
Recently, we have been coming up to Buena Vista in July , to camp with my brother's family during the antique car show/beach music festival. We would run into Dewey & Sarah each time we came up & always talked high school days & stories about sports. When we talked about Dewey's business & recreation activities, I told him how proud I was to see him become such a success in life, by making so many friends , being respected by so many people & providing a life style that was full of excitement & passion for living. I think often of all of the young people that I had the pleasure & honor to teach & coach during my years @ NCHS. I have kept up with some of them, Dewey for one...I told my daughter Erin today of this sad news. She didn't know the name...I told her that he was one of my students & a great athlete & ambassador for NCHS, and when she was a little girl,he picked her up & held her many times...now she has two sons of her own & life goes on... I will truly miss the young boy who grew up to be a great man...Dewey...peace be with you..

Sarah,
I am so sorry for your loss. Dewey was a man of his word, and very special, I remember when a family in need was with out wood for the winter, one call to Dewy and the family had fire wood. He told us no one should be cold. He gave of himself over all things. His smile, and his laugh will be missed. Remember your friends are with you and Dewy is with our Lord ( making him laugh) Stay strong and know we are all here to help you now.

Sarah,
I remember when you and Dewey lived above the Sunny Mountain gas station, and my mom and I would come by early to get gas. The possibility of seeing Dewey so early in the morning was always a highlight, and he could even draw me out of my surly teenage angst to join in his joy. I haven't seen him in years, but his smile is as clear as day in my memories. I am so very sorry for your loss, but please know that Dewey has given so much joy through the years that he lives on in many, many hearts.

For the last few days, I’ve read the postings in this guest book and on the batteau.net web site by people who knew Dewey, some for a few years, some for many years. The large number of posts and the remembrances and emotions in them speak volumes about who he was and the many lives that he affected in his time on earth. He made an everlasting impression on the memories and hearts of everyone that knew him.
Knowing Dewey as a schoolmate, teammate and especially as a friend is a huge part of my life that I’ve always treasured and always will. Seeing him in later years was the same as when we were teenagers, not because he hadn't grown up, but because even as a teenager, he was mature beyond his years in his expression of friendship and caring and his love of people and life.
God blessed us with Dewey for over 50 years and he’s blessed us forever with memories of a man who with his love and caring made a difference in the lives of many, many people.
My thoughts and prayers are with you all, Sarah and all of Dewey's family.

Dewey, always made me smile even when I did not think I had a reason to smile. Dewey, out of the love he had for all of us gave with out wanting anyone to know it. He left a small box of items at my front door for several months after my son passed away. He never wanted my thanks but he sure got alot of love and respect from all who knew him. My life is richer for haveing known Dewey and Sarah.

Sarah and family:
It goes without saying....Dewey was by far, one of the kindest, humerous, enjoyable angels that ever walked the face of our earth. There is a poem that comes to my mind when I think of Dewey. It's a poem by Robert Kipling, "IF"...if you ever have the time to read it, please do so.
There are so many memories with Dewey...there is not enough space to list them all. Some of the most memorable are times spent with me and the other VA Jaycees years ago - so many memories...so little space to list them - PRICELESS!!! The most recent memory that I have, and I thank God for it, was at the Beach Music Festival at Glen Maury State Park with my family. Dewey, with you trailing, led us, and a "train" of dancers around the entire pavillion! His face was lit up like a light bulb...even strangers embraced him...you just couldn't help but do so. I feel so blessed to have known him, and to know that my children had a chance to meet him and have their memories as well.
He will be missed by ALL who knew him! Our thoughts are with you and yours.
