Grant Kinney Obituary

Grant Edward Kinney Grant Edward Kinney, Heritage Green resident and formerly of Brooklyn NY departed this life for peaceful and eternal rest on Monday, October 8, 2012 at Virginia Baptist Hospital in Lynchburg, VA. Born on March 9, 1932, Grant was the son of the late Grant Kinney Jr. and the former Alvin Crawford Kinney. He was drafted into the United States Army upon his high school graduation from New Rochelle High School. Grant received a pre-med college scholarship to Bradley University in Peoria, Illinois where he earned a Bachelor of Science Degree, with majors in sociology and psychology. He completed postgraduate work at Long Island University earning a Master of Science degree in Criminal Justice. He then joined the Brooklyn Family Court as a Probation Officer. In 1973, Grant was appointed as the fourth black United States Federal Probation Officer in the Eastern District of New York. Grant loved his job and made time to always encourage newly selected probation officers, acting as a mentor and big brother.

In 1995 upon his retirement, Grant and his wife, the late Frances Jones Kinney established residence in Amherst, VA. He joined the Mount Shiloh Baptist Church in Monroe, VA and sang on the Men's Chorus. He was very active in the community and an avid racquet ball player at the downtown YMCA. He was a 60 year member of his beloved fraternity, Omega Psi Phi, purple and gold, and held many positions with the local chapter Gamma Omega.

Grant was also a very dedicated member of the Black U.S. Probation Officers Association (BUSPOA) and always looked forward to attending the annual reunions held each summer throughout the country. Grant who was an impeccable dresser for all occasions as well as being a great dancer had a profound passion for life and was someone who never met a stranger. He and his wife traveled extensively including their many cruises together. After relocating to Central VA, he continued to be a role model for others. He loved being involved and volunteered in a number of organizations: served as a board member and officer for CALL - Adult Literacy Education Program in Amherst, member of the Clifford Ruritan Club and also assisted as an After-Prom Party Chaperon for Amherst County High School. Grant touched the lives of many both far and near as he would send 200-300 Christmas cards each year to a host of relatives and friends who will cherish his precious memories forever.

A memorial service celebrating the life of Grant Kinney will be announced at a later date. Condolences may be emailed to [email protected] Community Funeral Home directing www.communityfuneralhomeinc.com

To the family of Grant Kinney. He will be missed and remembered for his friendliest and kind heart. I can still see him on the dance floor having a call. He would dance with every lady and made certain that they had a good time. You will be missed.

I enjoyed watching Grant smile as he showed us youngster what it meant to truly embrace the moment, as he did each time I saw him at BUSSPOE.

I am sure, he is smiling down from glory now that he is finally home.

We will forever cherish the memories.

Grant,
Rest in peace

With heartfelt Sympathy --- What a pleasure to have known someone as pleasant, energetic, and compassionate as Grant Kenny. The time we spent together at BUSPO events and the counsel and advice he provided were helpful to me in life. For that I am grateful. He will be missed but not forgotten.

To all of Grant's family and friends, I offer you my deepest sympathy. I met Grant and Francis at my first BUSPPOE family reunion in 1990. They were such a loving couple and I looked forward to seeing them each year. I will cherish the time I spent visiting with him a few years ago at Heritage Green. Even during this time of his life, he was still a kind, gentle, and humble man. He will be missed but never forgotten.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to family and friends of the late and great Grant Kinney. We met grant and his wife shortly after they moved to Amherst Co. and it was love at first sight. To know both of them was to love them. Whenever we had our family celebrations, he always attended and enjoyed every minute. He was joy to be around. I visited VBH on last week. We shall always hold on to the precious memories of a fun loving christian man. My children was very fond of him also.

Grant was an important role model for me when I first became a USPO. He cared about everyone and made a real impression on me. He was as good a man as I have ever known. The world lost a good one when he passed away. He will be sorely missed.

My Dearest Grant, I miss you. You and I agreed to be "play cousins" and you looked after me and took care of me my first few years of BUSPPOE! We became close. I'll never forget you or Francis. You brought such joy to the family reunions each year. I still have an image of us in New York in 1996 at the Cotton Club, jamming to the USPO band. I look at those pictures and am filled with joy - we were so young and attractive and full of energy. I love you. Rest in peace and give Francis a hug for me. Evelyn Reed

Grant was truly a loving and giving person. He and my cousin Frances always opened up their home to my son, Marc. I will never forget all that they did for him. He truly loved his wife, Frances and his animals. I will really miss him. Until we meet again, may you have eternal rest and peace with our Lord and Savior Jesus the Christ.

Grant was my next door neighbor at the Clinton Street location of U.S. Probation in Brooklyn, where our offices were right next to each other. He was a straight shooter, smooth as silk, and would help everyone. He used to tell me that we whisk our lives away because of all the appointments we make into the future, how quickly life goes. He also warned me not to get backed up at work: "Don't think about how you're going to do it, just do it". To this day when I sit too long with something, I remember what he said and jump in. Grant and Frances had the greatest parties at their home in Brooklyn. My husband still talks about those days when we first met (twenty years ago!)and the parties we used to go to there. We have his lovely words to us on our wedding video which he and Frances traveled from VA to attend in New York. I will miss that classy, fun and fast-thinking man I knew and the many memorable moments that we shared.

Some may also recall Grant's meticulous selection and care for his personal automobiles. One of my few regrets is not having the opportunity to visit him in Virginia after his relocation. One of my fondest memories is he and Frances showing up at my door unannounced here in his native New Rochelle. Grant was a truly good Guy. See you on the other side of the river, Buddy.

Grant was my fathers roomate at Heritage Green, what a gentleman.
He was a joy to meet and we will certainly miss him, Rick Martin and family

Grant will be greatly missed. I will always remember Francis and Grant visiting the Joneses in New York State when we were young and Grant filming every event he attended. What a great time watching Grant dance in my family's home. He had a great joy of life and wanted everyone to enjoy it as much as he. Great memories of a great cousin.

What a fine obituary! Grant was a great cousin! He and Frances made sure they attend numerous family weddings and celebrations! They would always have their 8mm camera in hand to document many events .... and we would laugh and enjoy his commentary as the family movies were played back for us. You lived a good life, Grant. Now, reconnect with your wife and rejoice in your afterlife! Peace, love, solace. Cousin Brenda and family
