Isola Johnston Obituary

Isola N. "Shug" Johnston Isola Johnston, presently of The Summit Assisted Living Facility, formerly of Rustburg, known to friends as "Shug", passed away on September 25, 2012. She was born May 10, 1922, to Herbert and Jeanette Nelson in Frankfort, Indiana. She attended Western University for Women, now part of Miami University, in Oxford, Ohio, where she met and married Donald N. "Buck" Johnston, upon his graduation from Air Force Officer Candidate School. They spent the next two decades stationed at various military bases, while adding four children to their family.

After his retirement from the Air Force at the rank of Lt. Colonel, 'Buck' went into Public Administration and eventually settled in Concord, and then Rustburg, Virginia, where he became the first County Administrator of Campbell County. In addition to working as a proofreader with Meredith- Burda Corporation, 'Shug' became very involved in various community activities. She served as an Elder of Rustburg Presbyterian Church. She was an enthusiastic member of the Rustburg Methodist Church Handbell Choir. She taught adult literacy through the Literacy Project of the Campbell County Library, as well as being a volunteer with both the Campbell County Crisis Center and Hospice of the Hills. In her spare time, Shug could always be depended upon to make and decorate a cake for any occasion or birthday. She is predeceased by her late husband and eldest daughter, Kristan Johnston. She is survived by her three remaining children: Scott Johnston, of Oxford Ohio; Joel Johnston, of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; and Erin Johnston Newton, of Carlsbad, California. Donations on her behalf may be made to Literacy Volunteers-Campbell County Public Library, P.O. Box 310, Rustburg, Virginia, 24588.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, September 29, 2012, at 1:00 p.m. at the Rustburg Presbyterian Church. The Reverends Susan Balfour and Sherwood Smith will be conducting the service.

I have fond memories of Isola I am Dr. Shahady's nurse and talked many times on phone to Isola. She was a great pt. and I enjoyed working with her. She loved her children and did not want to bother them with things , she was very independent. When my mother Barbara Pillow fell and broke her arm I would occasionally go by to check on her she was always glad to see friends.
I would also call and talk with her on phone she will always be remembered , I hope I have as much spunk and love of life as she did and can be as independent as she was. I will really miss her.

My heart aches as the news of her passing. She was such a dear friend to my Dad (father in law) James Payne, who was killed in August. I am so sorry that I didn't get out to see her at the Summit as I had wanted, but hope that my cards let her know how much she was loved and appreciated. She will be missed, but I know that Shug and Dad are having a wonderful time of fellowship at this very moment!
