James CARSCADDEN Obituary

James Henry Carscadden

James Henry Carscadden, 91, of Lynchburg, died Sunday, July 5, 2009.

Born in Schuylerville, N.Y., Dec. 3, 1917, he was the youngest of three children born to John and Mary Carscadden. He was preceded in death by his parents, siblings and beloved wife of 65 years, Shirley "Bud" Olsen Carscadden.

He completed his undergraduate degree at Columbia University, N.Y., and soon after graduating began his 34-year career working for Proctor and Gamble, followed by five years working for the Virginia Department of Taxation. He and Shirley settled in Annandale and lived there for 54 years. It is there that they raised their four children, were dedicated members of St. Michael's and St. Ambrose Church, helped found Holmes Run Acres Pool, played thousands of hands of bridge, worked as docents at the Smithsonian and entertained their children, their childrens' spouses and nine grandchildren most every weekend.

Jim was known for his adoration of his wife and family, his love of his Irish heritage, his Augusts spent going to the races at Saratoga and the Villa Maria in his cherished Schuylerville, his many Dalmatians, his daily review of the business section, the Sunday New York Times crossword puzzle, his talent with poem writing, Big Band music, his evening cocktail or Molson and his collection of hats.

He is survived by his four children, Mary Ann Booz and husband, Bill, of Lynchburg; Jim Carscadden and Susan of Gaithersburg, Md.; Trace Carscadden of Vienna; and Lisa Roarty and husband, Ed, of Richmond; and nine grandchildren, Kristin Booz Dabney and husband, Lewis, and daughters Caroline and Anna Katherine of Lynchburg;, Hendrick Booz, of Alexandria Virginia, Lucas Carscadden of Baltimore, Md.; Tracy Roarty Green and husband, Adam, of Arlington; Schuyler Carscadden of Philadelphia, Pa.; James and Ian Roarty of Richmond; and Michael and Catherine Belous of Vienna.

A funeral mass will be held at Holy Cross Catholic Church, at 11 a.m. on Monday, July 27, 2009, and a burial is planned in Schuylerville, N.Y., Saturday, Aug. 8, 2009. In lieu of flowers, a memorial may be sent to Holy Cross Catholic Church, 710 Court St., Lynchburg, VA 24504.
