Janice Morris Martin

Janice Morris Martin, 85, of Lynchburg, passed away on Tuesday, October 28, 2025, after a courageous battle with cancer.

Born on October 31, 1939, in Lynchburg, she was a daughter of the late Hugh Franklin Morris and Catherine Thoms Morris and was also preceded in death by an older sister, Betty Morris.

Janice graduated from E.C. Glass High School and was an alumna of The College of William and Mary and Lynchburg College. After graduating from Lynchburg College, Janice began her teaching career, where she helped shape the lives of children beyond the classroom. To this day, many of her former students talk about the impact she had on them.

She met the love of her life, Terry "Sonny" Martin, and they married a year and a half later. They celebrated their 60th anniversary in June of this year. A year after their marriage, they welcomed their first son, Blaine. After their second son, Stuart, was born in 1969, Janice left teaching to raise her family. Once their children were in school, Janice returned to the classroom as a substitute teacher. She was also a well-known face at The Farm Basket in Lynchburg where she worked part-time for many years.

Janice became a devoted grandmother when her only grandchild, Pierce, was born in 2005. She was an active member of Centenary United Methodist Church and loved her yearly trips to the beach with close friends.

She is survived by her husband, Sonny; her sons, Terrell Blaine Martin (Pattie) and Stuart Morris Martin; and her grandson, Pierce Butler Martin, all of Lynchburg.

The family would like to thank the nurses and doctors at Centra Lynchburg General Hospital and Virginia Baptist Hospital for their care over the last few years. They would also like to thank Sally Tisdale for her home care over the past two years.

A Celebration of Janice's Life will be conducted at 4 p.m., Wednesday, November 5, 2025, at Centenary United Methodist Church, 1501 Rivermont Avenue in Lynchburg by Rev. Benjamin E. Horrocks with a visitation following the service at the church. Burial will be private in Fort Hill Memorial Park.
