Joseph Dougherty Obituary

Joseph "Joe" Dougherty

Joseph "Joe" Dougherty, 69, of Goode, passed away at his residence on Thursday, May 6, 2010, after a courageous battle with cancer. He was the husband of Patricia "Pat" Dougherty, his high school sweetheart and wife of nearly 50 years.

Joe was born Dec. 25, 1940, in Chester, Pa. He was a son of the late John and Alice Dougherty. He was a proud graduate of St. James High School in Chester, Pa., and took great pleasure in working for James T. Davis Paint Company in Lynchburg for the past 25 years.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children, Paddy Dougherty, of Lynchburg, Jay Dougherty and wife, Sheri, of Forest, and Mike Dougherty and wife, Colleen, of Forest; his grandchildren, Peter Davies and wife, Suzanna, Megan Davies, Kaitlin, Ashley, Joey, Brady, Brendan, and Shannon Dougherty; his brothers, Jack Dougherty and wife, Geri, Jim Dougherty and wife, Peg, Jerry Dougherty and wife, Mary; and sister, Judy Flood. He was preceded in death by infant daughter, Kathleen Dougherty.

Joe was a family man who believed that you create family wherever you go. To his immediate family and friends, he was "Popa Joe." To his co-workers and community at large, he was "Dr. Joe" and to his favorite golfing buddies, Joe, Lenny and Paul at Colonial Hills, he was "Easy Money."

"Team Dougherty" would like to extend their deepest gratitude to the medical teams at UVA and Centra Health, who cared for him as if he were their own. This journey was eased by all who shared their love, support and prayers too numerous to mention.

The family will receive friends from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday, May 15, 2010, at St. Thomas More Catholic Church with a Mass of Resurrection at 11 a.m. Interment at the church immediately following Mass.

Tharp Funeral Home & Crematory, Lynchburg, is assisting the family, (434) 237-9424. Condolences may be sent to the family by visiting www.tharp

I offer my deepest sympathies to your family on Joe's death. He had that same smile when he was in my freshman English class in 1955 and when I coached him in freshman football.
