JOSEPH GRAHAM Obituary

Joseph Loflin Graham

Joseph Loflin Graham, 56, died peacefully at his home in Keswick, VA on Thursday, September 1, 2011. Born in Lynchburg, VA, he was the son of Claire Loflin Graham and the late Reginald Maurice Graham of Charlotte, NC. He was the grandson of the late Rev. Nelius Longfellow and Olive Talley Loflin and the late George Walter and Lucille Coleman Graham, all of Lynchburg. In addition to his mother, survivors include his wife, Brenda W. Graham; his sister Regina Graham Love and her husband, Shawn of Charlotte, NC; his brother, David C. Graham and his wife, Jodie; his niece, Katherine E. Graham all of Mt. Holly, NC; an uncle and ten cousins. Joe was a graduate of Myers Park High School in Charlotte and the University of Virginia. At UVA he was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity and there, as well as at Myers Park, he formed many deep and lasting friendships. After graduation he entered the business world as co-owner of restaurants Fog Subs and The Cotton Exchange in Charlottesville. He later worked with Albemarle Bank & Trust and The Equitable Life Assurance Company. In 1986, he realized a long-held ambition in the founding of his own company, FIC Staff Services which continues to operate successfully. He was a member of the Young Men's Business Club and former member of the Redlands Club.

Joe was a young man of great determination and lived life with zeal. He was an avid reader, a competitive athlete, a lover of the outdoors and an astute businessman. His devotion to family and friends was evident in all that he did. In facing the illness of cancer, he remained steadfast in courage and fortitude, as he did with all things. A private graveside service was held at 11:00 AM, September 10, 2011 at Fort Hill Memorial Park in Lynchburg. The family received friends from 3:00-5:00 in the afternoon at Hill and Wood Funeral Home in Charlottesville.

Joe was a very special friend to me, from high school through our early thirties, and I regret that we lost touch. Joe was one of the most interesting and unique people that I have ever known. I wish to extend my deepest sympathies to his family regarding their loss of Joe.

Dear Brenda,
I was deeply saddened last night when Corinne gave me the news of Joe's passing. He was a kindred soul to me, one of self-deprecation, intensity, ribald humor, outside-the-box intelligence, and a flair for seeing things in a novel light. Let these attributes bring you solace.

Brenda - We will miss Joe's different and always stimulating take on the world, his enthusiasm and determination on the squash and tennis courts, and his boundless appetite for tilting at the next windmill.

Brenda, When I think of Joe I think of all the good times like the YMBC Christmas dances, playing tennis at the Greencroft. Joe was a great partner and a formidable adversay. The great duck hunting trips at Shenandoah River. Nights at the Red-Land Club playing poker and rolling dice. I love his wit and wry sence of humor. He will be sorely missed. Our
thoughts and prayers are with you.

Brenda, I can't think of all the good things that make up what Joe was and is today. From the first time I met him my third day at UVA all the way up to our frequent golf and tennis outings as well as our mutual fondness for riding motorcycles. His dry sense of humour and unique commentary on daily life will be missed by me and many others. You are in my thoughts and prayers.

To say Joe was a breath of fresh air
Is not completely accurate or fair.
He was a gale force wind with mighty hurricane power,
He truly attacked life with ferocity every waking hour.
He was a warrior on the squash, paddle& tennis courts,
He had a wonderful wry sense of humor and was seldom out of sorts.
Joe had a great appreciation of his life,
He was a joy to behold to all his friends, family and wife.
I will surely miss his funny self deprecating tales,
I will miss his never ending search for the Holy Grails.
I cherish the good times we shared my old friend,
You may be gone, but the memories will never end.
Sorry for the pain you had to go through.
SO LONG -IT WAS INDEED GOOD TO KNOW YOU!

Words can not express my sorrow. Joe was my friend a long time mentor. I am a better person today because of what he added to my life. He will be missed terribly but he will always be with me.

Brenda, you are in our hearts and always will have a special place there. No one will ever know the trials that you have been faced with over the past year or two. Your love, dedication and support for Joe during this tough period is testiment to your strength and character. We love you and will always be here if you need us.
