Joy Texter Obituary

Joy Turpin Texter

Joy Turpin Texter of Richmond, Virginia, passed away on July 27, 2022, at the age of 76, following a sudden illness. She was born on July 30, 1945, in Bedford, Virginia, the daughter of the late Emma Rhodes Abbott and Russell Cridlin Turpin. She was also predeceased by her husband, Dr. John Henry Texter Jr., and her brother, Russell Barry Turpin.

Joy devoted her career to nursing administration and medical education, working at the Medical College of Virginia, her alma mater, as nursing director at Richmond Memorial, and later at the Southern Illinois University School of Medicine. She was a devoted wife to John as well as a loving and caring mother and aunt. A gifted gardener, Joy delighted in the vegetable garden she tended with her great niece, Miriam. She was also a wonderful cook and hostess, a friend to all animals, and a talented seamstress known for the many outfits, quilts, and costumes she sewed for her family. Joy was happiest with John by her side; the two loved to regale any and all listeners with stories of the many road trips and adventures they took with their family.

Joy is survived by her daughter, Rebecca Texter Arlauskas, her husband, Joseph and their son, Seth; her son, John Henry Texter III, his wife, Lori and their children, Zeke, Emma and Eli; her niece, Anna Kanter, her husband, Jonathan, and their daughter, Miriam; her nephew, Benjamin Turpin; and her sister-in-law, Barbara Turpin.

The family will hold a private interment service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to your local Humane Society or SPCA, or to Winfree Memorial Baptist Church, 13617 Midlothian Turnpike, Midlothian, VA 23113.

I just heard of Joys passing when I saw her name in the MCV nursing magazine. I was immediately filled with regret that we'd lost touch recently. We graduated from Nursing school together and shared many car rides from Lynchburg. We were apt mates for a couple of years, too.
We had emailed a few years ago after Johns accident but I didn't know he'd passed away too.
I'm so sorry for our loss. Joy was so sweet.

When Joy and John moved to Springfield, Illinois, I was blessed to have them as neighbors and as special friends. God sent Joy to me on many occasions from helping me through the tragic death of my mother to sewing the hem of my daughter´s bridal dress in an emergency. Joy was always there for her friends. God bless you, my friend, and I know you are happy to be with John in Heaven

Please accept my most sincere condolences. I had the privilege of knowing Joy and John at Winfree Church. I have missed her in the congregation during these pandemic days. Joy was a lovely, gentle, graceful woman who loved her Lord and her family. She spoke of you all often with deep affection. I enjoyed hearing Joy and John´s stories, especially those about MCV in the years before I joined the staff. My thoughts will be with you in the days and weeks to come.

So sorry the hear of Joy´s death. I was her Pastor, at Goode,Va. more than 60 years ago. Never could one find a finer young and dedicated lady. She was the pianist at our small country church and was faithful. I performed the wedding for Joy and John. They are together again. Prayers for comfort and peace for family and friends.
