Julia Magdeline Nicholas Morgan

Julia Magdeline Nicholas Morgan, 86, of Madison Heights, died Monday, Feb. 16, 2009. She was the wife of the late William Tunstall Morgan.

Magdeline was born Dec. 2, 1922, in Amherst County, a daughter of the late Susie Belle Wright Nicholas and Montague Mason Nicholas.

She is survived by two daughters, Sandra M. Spencer and her husband, Robert, of Lynchburg, and Linda M. Mays and her husband, David, of Madison Heights; a sister, Mrs. A. K. (Dorothy) Allen of Madison Heights; two sisters-in-law, Mrs. Charles H. (Wilmouth) Nicholas, of Madison Heights, and Mrs. William (Frances) Nicholas of Arlington; four grandchildren, Valerie Kidd and her husband, Wayne (Bootsie), of Amherst, Troy Spencer and his wife, Amy, of California, Bryan Morris and his wife, Jane, of Forest, and Todd Spencer of Roanoke; and six great-grandchildren, Morgan Kidd, Regan Morris, Skyler Morris, Kaine Morris, Cale Spencer and Walker Morris; and a good friend, Betty Burch.

In addition to her parents and husband, Magdeline was also preceded in death by her son, William Dixon Morgan; six brothers, Charles H. Nicholas, William T. Nicholas, John Harris Nicholas, James S. Nicholas, Montague Mason Nicholas Jr. and Joe W. Nicholas; and two sisters, Mazie Fitzgerald and Evelyn Woodson.

Magdeline was a charter member of Randolph Memorial Baptist Church. She was on the Governors Advisory Committee for the Division of Volunteerism for eight years. She was a 1940 graduate of Holy Cross High School, a member of the Ageless Wonders and a previous chairman of the Amherst County Democratic Party for many years. Along with being remembered as a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, she will be remembered as a "good and faithful Democrat."

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 20, 2009, at Tharp Funeral Home, Lynchburg. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 21, 2009, at Randolph Memorial Baptist Church, with Dr. Derik Hamby and the Rev. D. Jack Hamilton officiating. Interment will follow in Fort Hill Memorial Park.
