Julius Lee Tolley Sr.

Julius Lee "Bear" Tolley, Sr., 93, of Lynchburg passed away Thursday, January 11, 2024 at Centra Lynchburg General Hospital. He was the loving husband of the late Phyllis Almond Tolley for 64 years.

Born March 18, 1930 in Lynchburg, he was a son of the late William T. Tolley, Jr. and Mary Burton Tolley. In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by his son, J.L. "Kip" Tolley, Jr. and a brother, William Burton "Billy" Tolley.

Bear proudly served his country in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1952 to 1954; worked as a mechanic for the Russell Gibbs Packard Dealership; and later retired as manager of the Harvey's and Crist Motels. He was a member of Chestnut Hill United Methodist Church.

He leaves to cherish his memory a daughter-in-law, Brenda B. Tolley; his daughter-like friend, Bobbie Harvey Butler; several nieces and nephews including Danny and Darryl Hudnall.

A Celebration of Bear's Life will be conducted at 12 p.m., Saturday, January 20, 2024 in the chapel of Heritage Funeral Service 427 Graves Mill Road in Lynchburg by Rev. Ron Litten. The family will receive friends from 10:30 a.m. until service time at the funeral home. Burial will take place in Fort Hill Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in memory of Bear to Chestnut Hill United Methodist Church, 4660 Fort Avenue, Lynchburg, VA 24502 or a nonprofit organization of your choice.
