Langhorne Mauck Obituary

Langhorne Sydnor Mauck, of Kings Grant Retirement Community in Martinsville, passed away peacefully Friday morning, April 5, 2024, at the age of 87.

Born in Lynchburg on September 15, 1936, to Charles Raine Sydnor and Louise Starke Sydnor, Langhorne and her two brothers, Charles Raine Sydnor, Jr. and Edgar Starke Sydnor, grew up surrounded by the extended Sydnor family and their maternal grandmother, Elizabeth "Bessie" Starke.

Langhorne graduated from E. C. Glass High School in 1954 and earned her undergraduate degree from Agnes Scott College in 1958. Upon graduation, she moved to Newark, NJ to work as a flight attendant for Trans World Airlines before making her way to Richmond in 1960, where she was employed by Miller & Rhoads department store and taught math at Tuckahoe Junior High School. In 1963, she and Dr. Robert H. "Bob" Mauck were married at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Lynchburg.

Lang, as her friends knew her, and Bob moved to Martinsville in 1968 to build a family life together, rooted in their deep Christian faith and their dedication to neighbors and community. Lang, a 56-year member of First Presbyterian Church, served as an Elder, a Christian education leader for youth and children, and an adult Sunday school teacher. She was a dedicated member of the Chancel Choir. Following Bob's death in 1985, she earned a Master of Arts in Teaching from Hollins University and returned to the classroom to teach American history at Carlisle School for 10 years until her retirement.

In addition to work and enjoyment in the Charity League, Piedmont Arts, and the Garden Club, Lang's love for Martinsville led her to new leadership and philanthropic roles. She served on advisory boards for Kings Grant/Sunnyside Communities, as well as for Piedmont and BB&T banks. Most recently, she joined the Community Foundation of Western Virginia's "Women in Philanthropy" initiative, which celebrates the important role women play in building community. Always dear to her heart was her alma mater; she was a member of the Frances Winship Walters Society at Agnes Scott College.

Lang is survived by her children, Hutch and Tracey Mauck of Richmond, Harriet and William Regen of Davidson, NC, and Louise and Tim Rawls of Camano Island, WA. She cherished her seven grandchildren, Annie Mauck Lokesh (Naveen) and Maggie Mauck, Mary Lang and Jon Regen, and Caroline, Helen, and Huston Rawls. Summer family beach trips each year brought her great joy and strengthened the bonds of family she treasured.

A service to celebrate Lang's life will be held at First Presbyterian Church in Martinsville at 3 p.m. on Saturday, April 27. A family graveside burial will be held prior to the memorial service at Spring Hill Cemetery in Lynchburg.

Memorial gifts may be made to First Presbyterian Church, Martinsville or to Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care of VA and NC.

When I moved to Martinsville in 1978 as a newlywed, I met Lang on various occasions and loved her! She was a lovely and gracious lady and always rose to the occasion in every situation. I left Martinsville 12 years ago after my husband died, but always admired the way she continued her life after losing Bob.

Heaven has gained a beautiful angel! Lang was such a special part of our HRTs (Happy Retired Teachers) group. We had so much fun together. Lang will be sorely missed by all of us and everyone who had the privilege of knowing her.
Sincere condolences to all of her family.

Lovely woman. So glad to have met her and heard of her from Dr. Sydnor and Mary Jane. That family taught us a feeling of belonging in a new city.
