Larry Gene Fifer, 62, of Bedford, passed away Saturday, Nov. 18, 2006, at Lynchburg General Hospital.
He was born in Lynchburg, a son of the late Edward Gardner Fifer and Patria Austin Fifer.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers, Edward R. Fifer, William P. Fifer, Ryan A. Fifer and Kenneth Fifer; five sisters, Evelyn F. Brown, May Fifer, Audrey F. Massie, Margaret F. Tiller and Patricia F. Casey.
He was a retired employee with 37 years of service at Georgia-Pacific Big Island Paper Mill, served in the U.S. Marine Corp, was a member of Calvary Baptist Church, and was an avid NASCAR fan and enjoyed fishing and hunting.
He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Shirley Wright Fifer; son, Matthew G. Fifer of Evington, and his girlfriend, Carrie Mattox, of Lynchburg; two brothers, Dewey J. Fifer, and Dean Fifer; three sisters, Gayle F. Burks, Glenna F. Putney and Amy F. Burks; He is also survived by his mother-in-law, Gracie M. Wright; numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 21, 2006, at Updike Funeral Home Chapel in Bedford with the Rev. Ray Lyons and the Rev. Wayne Murphy officiating. Burial will follow in Greenwood Cemetery.
Friends may call after 12 p.m. today and the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. at Updike Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Bedford.
