Moses Thornton

Moses Thornton, born Oct. 26, 1926, departed this life May 16, 2010, at Virginia Baptist Hospital after a long illness. He was the son of the late Jessie Thornton and Dick Smith.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Geraldine Thornton; two sons, Leon Thornton and Jerry Patterson; and a sister, Helen Hamlett.

He leaves to cherish his memory five daughters and four sons, Helen Faye Yeager (Sean), of Gladstone, Rachel Thornton (David), of Amherst, Jessie Adams (Robert), of Brema Bluff, Mary Davis (Cornelius), of Roanoke, Lucille Ellis (Eddie Jr.), of Amherst, Alfonza Patterson, of Roanoke, Robert Thornton (Daphne), of Gladstone, James Thornton (Norman), of Amherst, and Moses S. Thornton (Tammy), of Gladstone; daughter-in-law, Delores Patterson; 37 grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Sarah Morris (Clinton) and Nannie Moss (Robert), both of Gladstone; 29 great-grandchildren; one sister, Clara Jones (Charles), all of Gladstone; two brothers-in-law, William Robertson (Joyce) and John Robinson (Carrie); two devoted cousins, Frances Scruggs Thornhill and June Coleman; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday, May 21, 2010, in Court Street Baptist Church at the corner of Sixth and Court Streets, Lynchburg, with the Rev. Alfred Jones as eulogist. Interment will be in the Thornton Family Cemetery. His remains may be viewed in the church from 1 p.m. until the time of the funeral. The family will receive friends at the residence.

My thoughts and prayers are with all of you in the loss of your Daddy.He was a special person and I am blessed to have known him.I remember fondly all the times I came to your house to play with you girls...your Mama fixing your hair and Moses thinking he was keeping everybody straight....I miss those days.You have many fond memories of the both of them and I know you cherish them.God will give you the strength to make it thru the next few days and one day we will all be together again in heaven.All my love, Shelly (Lyle) Kitchen
