He served on the Campbell County Board of Social Services and the board of the Retired Seniors Volunteer Program, and was a member of Ebenezer Baptist Church in Naruna, where he taught Sunday school and served as a deacon.

To The Vandegrift family,
I was saddened to hear of your loss. I had the pleasure of meeting Norvell while working at the Summit. What a precious man. He always had a smile upon his face and kind words for all. He fought the good fight and today he suffers no more. May you find the peace and comfort you need thru the Lord, during this most difficult time!
