Robert NEWMAN Obituary

Robert Edmond Newman

Robert Edmond Newman, 85, of Altavista, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 19, 2008, at Autumn Care of Altavista. He was born Wednesday, Aug. 22, 1923, in Carroll County, a son of the late Asbury Newman and Mary Hall Newman. He was a retired employee of BGF Industries and was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served in World War II.

Surviving is his wife, Lelia Florence Newman Newman; two daughters, Ileen Trimble of Fries and Rosemary Dalton and husband, Dennis, of Altavista; four sons, James L. Brewer and wife, Nancy, of Winston-Salem, N.C., R. Eddie Brewer of Delmar, Md., Chapman Leonard and wife, Marcia, of Winston-Salem, N.C., and Bruce Testerman of Altavista; 45 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 22, 2008, at Updike Funeral Chapel, Huddleston, with the Rev. Joanne Newman officiating. Interment, with military honors by American Legion Post 16, will follow in Union Chapel Baptist Church Cemetery. Friends may call after noon on Friday, Nov. 21, 2008, and the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. at Updike Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Huddleston.
