Ruth Shackelford Obituary

Ruth Hedrick Shackelford

Ruth Hedrick Shackelford, 92, of Bedford, died Monday, Sept. 20, 2010, at the Elks National Home Special Care. She was born in Maysville, W.Va., on June 2, 1918, and was the daughter of the late Charles Gordon Hedrick and Nora Auralia Rohrbaugh Hedrick.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Charlie Lee Shackelford, and her brothers and sisters.

She was a member of Main Street United Methodist Church and the Order of the Eastern Star. Ruth loved her family, friends and enjoyed volunteering her time at Bedford Memorial Hospital as a "Pink Lady" and Bedford Christian Ministries. She worked for 25 years in the gift shop at the Peaks of Otter Lodge.

She is survived by her children, Ronald Lee Shackelford and his wife, Sara, of Smith Mountain Lake, David Timothy Shackelford and Terry S. Anderson and husband, Chad, all of Bedford; three grandchildren, Nicole Shackelford Johnson and husband, Willie, Jessica Lee Shackelford, all of Bedford, and Christopher Damon Shackelford, of Dallas, Texas; and one great-grandson, Luke William Johnson.

Memorials may be made to the Elks National Home Special Care, 931 Ashland Ave., Bedford, or the Main Street United Methodist Church, 212 E. Main St., Bedford.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 24, 2010, at Main Street United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Les Trail and the Rev. Carl H. Douglass Jr. officiating. Burial will follow in Virginia Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 23, 2010, at Burch-Messier Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 317 W. Main St., Bedford, (540) 586-7360.
