Thomas Doyle Obituary

Thomas O. Doyle Thomas O'Brien Doyle, 77, died on August 6, 2012 peacefully with his family at his side. He was born October 3, 1934 in Lynchburg, VA to the late Cecilia Allen and William Michael Doyle. He is survived by his adoring bride of fifty-four years, Patricia Kinney Doyle, four children and nine grandchildren: Thomas O. (Mary) Doyle of Richmond, VA and their children Kellie (Isaac) Hutchison, Casey, and Thomas Doyle; Elizabeth A. Doyle of Lynchburg, VA and her children Robert, Charles, and William Laverty; Peter K. (Julie) Doyle of Lynchburg and their children Kevin, Sarah, and Margaret Doyle; and Kathleen G. Doyle of Ypsilanti, MI and her partner Mary Jo Callan. His sister Celia A. Doyle, several nieces and nephews, cousins, and close friends also survive him. Tom was preceded in death by his parents, his beloved son Charles P. "Chuckie" Doyle, his brother William A. Doyle, and his sister-in-law Betty Leigh N. Doyle. A lifelong member of Holy Cross Catholic Church where he served in various leadership capacities, Tom graduated from Holy Cross Academy in Lynchburg, VA and the University of Notre Dame in Notre Dame, IN with a degree in Business Administration. He spent his entire career as the President of Doyles' Florist in Lynchburg, VA. As an inveterate jokester, T.O. never met a person that he did not tease.

He was an elected member of Lynchburg City Council from 1984-1987. He served on the boards of the University of Notre Dame Alumni Association, Salvation Army, First Federal Savings and Loan, Gateway, and Kum-Ba-Yah. He received the Humanitarian Award from the National Council of Christians and Jews. Most recently, he was elected to the Resident's Council at Westminster Canterbury. However, his proudest accomplishments were his faithful and happy marriage and his close-knit family who will miss him beyond measure. The family will received friends today, August 8, 2012 from 5:00 - 7:00 pm at Tharp Funeral Home, 220 Breezewood Drive, Lynchburg. A Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated on Thursday, August 9 at 11:00 am at Holy Cross Catholic Church. Interment will be private. Tharp Funeral Home and Crematory, Lynchburg is assisting the family. (434) 237-9424. Condolences may be sent by visiting: www.tharpfuneralhome.com.

Words can't convey the loss of Tom. He was really an outstanding person with a great sense of humor and his death is such a great shock. I visited him about every day while he was going through rehab for his knee replacement and he wss the picture of health. He leaves behind tons of happy memories amd a wonderful family.

My first job out of High School was working for Doyle's Florist. Tommy and his siblings were wonderful to work for. As part of the Holy Cross community, Tommy was a bright light. His love for family and ability to cheer up anyone's day made him so special. He will be missed.

I am so sorry to hear of your loss. I have such fond memories of the Doyle family. When I was a young bride and 3,000 miles from home, the Doyle family became my second family. Such fabulous memories of working at Pittman Plaza with great people. I loved Tommy's sense of humor and love of his family. He will be greatly missed. May God comfort you during this difficult time.
