Anna Morrissey Karpiak

Karpiak - Anna Morrissey PLAINVIEW TEACHER DIES. Anna Morrissey Karpiak, a retired Foreign Language teacher and

chairperson, died Friday, May 12, 2023 in Plainview, NY, from a sudden illness. She was 92 years old. After receiving her

Bachelor and Master of Arts degrees in Spanish and Education in 1952 and 1953 from SUNY Albany, then called NYS College for Teachers, she taught Latin and Spanish at Staatsburg, NY. She moved to Long Island in 1955 and taught for one year in the Uniondale School District. Two years after the birth of her twins, Basil and Pamela, she returned to the classroom. She was

employed by the Plainview Old Bethpage School District from 1958 until she retired. During the 1965-1966 school year, she was on sabbatical leave and attended the University of

Barcelona, Spain, with a scholarship from the Spanish government. When her children went off to their universities, Ms. Karpiak

attended Hofstra University part-time. She received her

administrator's license in the same year that her children received their Bachelor's degrees. In 1984, she became chairperson of the Foreign Language Department at Plainview Old Bethpage High School and JFK High School as well as taught and remained in that position until her retirement in 1991. Ms. Karpiak had many interests, among them traveling, reading, the theatre, the ballet and visiting museums. After the untimely death of her daughter, Pamela, she devoted her time and efforts to volunteer work. She volunteered in Partners in Caring, her parish St. Pius X, Mercy First (formerly St. Mary's Family and Children's Services), and Good Shepherd Hospice (formerly Mercy Hospice). In 2002, she was named volunteer of the year of the latter two organizations. She retired from volunteering at age 90. She is survived by her son, Basil of Connecticut; his wife, Janet; and her granddaughter,

Alexandra; her sisters, Janet Morrissey, Eleanor Rafn; and many

nieces, nephews, and cousins. Her daughter, Pamela Karpiak

Koyen, predeceased her (1994); as well as her brothers,

Arthur (2014) and Francis; her sisters, Josephine Schwarz (1992),

Rachel Cuomo (2014), and Helen Morrissey (2021).

There are no visiting hours but a Mass of the Resurrection

will be celebrated on Saturday, May 27, 2023 at 10:45 AM at St. Pius X Roman Catholic Church on

Washington Avenue in Plainview, NY. Interment will be private.
