Arlene Barlam Obituary

BARLAM - Arlene G., passed away peacefully in her Syosset, NY home on January 6, 2021. She was 89 years old. Arlene was born in NYC on April 12,1931, daughter of the late Louis and Augusta Cohen. Arlene graduated from William H. Taft High School in the Bronx in 1948, before attending Brooklyn College, where she graduated in 1952 with a BA in Spanish and Junior High Education. Arlene received her Masters in Science of Education from Hofstra University in 1975. Arlene was an Elementary School teacher in the 4th, 5th, and 6th grades in The Deer Park School District for 37 years. Always active, she ran the Railroad Club, as well the Arts and Literary Club, helping to put out the Creative Impressions periodical each year. Following her retirement in 2004, Arlene worked for the next three years taking photographs at school events for posting on the school district website. Arlene spent time as a Cub Scout Den Mother, and as Head Councilor of the Girls at Woodbury Country Club during summers. Arlene pursued a wide variety of interests and hobbies passionately, including stamp collecting, piano playing, photography, bowling, gardening, working on her computer, and doing the daily crossword puzzle in pen. Arlene had a life-long love of music, in particular Opera, with a subscription to the Metropolitan Opera for many years. She particularly enjoyed listening to Maria Callas. Alene's greatest joy though, was spending time with her family. We all loved her so very much. She is survived by her son, Dr. Bruce Barlam, of Marblehead Ma, daughter Cathy Barlam and husband Frank Suriano, of Syosset NY, four grandchildren, Lisa Savran and husband Greg, of Commack, NY, David Barlam and wife Karolina, of Somerville, Ma, Jonathan Barlam, of Somerville, Ma, Nathaniel Barlam and wife Aurora, of Brooklyn NY, and two great grandsons, Landon and Dylan Savran. Dear Arlene, Mom, Grandmother, Great-Grandmother, & Friend, you will be in our hearts forever. Arlene was interred at Beth El Cemetery, Westwood, NJ.
