When I came on the Sufflok County Police Dept. many years ago, knowing full well that neither the Academy nor my field training could really prepare me for the rather daunting job ahead, it was an incalculable help when arriving at midnight to take over the Oakdale 520 car for the 12 to 8 shift, that the officer I was relieving did what he did: Rather than just handing me the keys and radio and briefly relating a couple of incidents of importance that had occurred during his shift, then jumping into his personal car to get home as quickly as possible, this cop stuck around a few extra minutes. Why? I know it was because he was aware that his relief was a new guy -a rookie. Instead of rushing off he stayed around a few additional minutes, chatting. About anything; cars and motorcycles (of course!), kids, mortgage rates... anything that cops talk about in the slow times between the outbreaks of chaos... until this rookie felt more at ease, ready to face the night ahead.
That cop I was relieving was, of course, Benny Ehlers and I was, and even now am, after almost 40 years on the force and 8 years of retirement, grateful to him for those conversations at midnight, at the 520 relief point, somewhere way down in Oakdale, so long ago.
The Benny I knew continued to be the same nice, quick-to-smile, friendly guy for the ensuing 15 or so years I worked, on and off, with him in the west end of the 5th. Even after he retired, as I walked the foot post on Main Street in Sayville, I'd occasionally hear the engine of that Cobra growling, followed by the driver shouting, "Hey Joel. How's it going?!" I'd turn in time to give a quick wave, and then he was gone.
Something else he said that I'll never forget: He always ended those midnight chats with me with "Hey, keep your head down. You'll be fine."
Thanks Benny.
