Canter - Carol Ann, 79, passed away peacefully at home on October 7, 2023 after bravely battling Progressive Supranuclear Palsy. Carol was born July 4, 1944 to Grace Poppe and Dr. John J. Magovern in
Brooklyn, NY. She attended Garden City High School on Long Island graduating in 1962 and then graduated from Wheaton College in Norton, MA in 1966 with a Bachelors of Arts. She worked initially in public relations at various firms, followed by a successful career as a freelance writer focused on the arts and education. Her work was published in many magazines and papers including The New York Times. Carol was committed to service and leadership, especially as it pertained to education and the arts. She generously gave her time and talent as a writer in her board service for various institutions including: St. Jean Baptiste High School (
New York, NY), Buckley Country Day School (Roslyn, NY) where she also served as Chairman of the Board of Trustees, The Professional Children's School (
New York, NY), Wheaton College, Planting Fields Foundation (
Oyster Bay, NY) and The John J. Magovern Memorial Fund at Mercy Hospital (Rockville Centre, NY). She was dedicated to the organizations she served and never hesitated to ask the tough questions. Carol's passions and interests included: opera, piano, theater, literature, travel, American art, cooking, swimming and tennis. Above all, Carol cherished her time with family and close friends. She was predeceased by her brother John C. Magovern. She is survived by her husband of 54 years, Stephen E. Canter; her brother, Frederick J. Magovern (Susan); three children, Stephen E. Canter Jr. (Courtney), Marigrace Morris (Paul), Joanna Roberson (Charlie); and eight grandchildren,
William, Laura, Genevieve, Abigail, Grace, Fiona, Owen and Carson.
